School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 7-9-- This is something different: the sports novel as farce. Brandon Lewis, the narrator (and the football team's manager), sends a lot of one-liners zinging through the pages--some are right on the mark, some wobble and hit the ground with a thud. The plot involves Brandon's extraordinary jock family, which includes the team's star quarterback and lineman (his brothers) and the star punter and field-goal kicker (his sister). The team is coached by a fanatic who believes in hard-hitting football until the middle of the book when he inexplicably becomes a devotee of trick plays. Most of the action centers around Brandon's description of the crunches, mashes, and head-tearing hits that the team engages in. Since he's a basketball player, he views it all with a certain disdain. By the novel's end, Brandon has become the unofficial assistant coach and has led the team to a state championship, his sister has become a star, and the coach of the opposing team is under constant psychiatric supervision. Those looking for a realistic sports book are not going to find it here, but the novel does provide a few laughs. --Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL

The story is about 3 boys Jim, John, and Brandon who are all brothers, and can't wait for football. They have a good defense and good offense, as Jim was a linebacker, John as the star quarterback, and Brandon as the water boy (he's actually a basketball player) all they needed was a kicker. The kickers they have now are just terrible, they lose yards. But, one day Brandon has a good idea, to make there sister become the kicker, he suggested this because, she loves sports, played soccer, knows how to play football, and isn't afraid to hit guys. She decides to tryout and everybody is making fun of her, but she makes it and the team is hoping to go to state and beat the 3 time champion (Vanden High School.) As they go through the season they go through hard grueling practices as Coach Knox (Ex-Marine) he thinks that making practice 10x harder will make them 10x better for example he made the players do "The Burma Road" which is a hard exercise, it involves endurance and a lot of hitting. With a Good defense/offense and a good coach, will they be able to go to state? Read this book and you will find out, this book is very interesting.
