Overview

Put on your pajamas and bring your sleeping bag—it’s time for Just Grace to go to a super sleepover! Birthdays and sleepovers are always super fun, but there’s just one thing that keeps Just Grace from getting super excited about this sleepover.

Book eleven in the Just Grace series continues the illustrated adventures of the beloved third-grader Just Grace, who has been praised by the Horn Book for having a voice that is “consistently funny, frank, and believable.” The familiar school, friendship, and family situations in these books resonate with Grace’s audience and keep them “speed[ing] through this latest and look[ing] forward eagerly to the next.”

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"As always, the humor derives from Grace's earnest attempts to do the right thing. . . Subplots involving Miss Lois' fervent geography unit and Grace's growing appreciation of Sammy add to the fun, as do Harper's squiggly spot cartoons."

Children's Literature - Linda Sweitzer
Just Grace is a typical third-grader, who gets into typical third grade situations. But getting herself out of typical third grade situations is anything but typical. After accidentally lying to her best friend Mimi, Just Grace wants to do the right thing and tell Mimi the truth, but her words never come out as she plans. The lie starts to snowball and soon everyone in school is involved. How is she going to explain and make her best friend forgive her? To make matters worse, Just Grace has been invited to a birthday party, which is not typical either, and it has her worried. She wants to be excited about the party like Mimi, but it is not her idea of a fun time. In Harper’s typical fashion, readers are lured into Just Grace’s emotional and delicate world through first-person point of view and the simple cartoon drawings help explain her situations and thoughts at any given moment. As the eleventh installment of an acclaimed children’s book series, this is a roller coaster ride filled with laughter, uncertainty, compassion, and fun that any third-grader will love. The eleventh book in the “Just Grace” series. Reviewer: Linda Sweitzer; Ages 6 to 9.

Gr 2–4—In this latest series installment, Just Grace has been invited to Grace F.'s birthday party. When she learns that it is to be an outdoor sleepover, she is nervous about the sleeping in a tent. Grace also deals with challenges at school after telling her friend Mimi that there is a ghost in the recycling container, which she does to hide the fact that she forgot to make Grace F. a birthday card. Soon the whole school is lining up to see the ghost and Grace has a hard time keeping track of her lies. After a practice night camping in the backyard with Dad, Grace resolves her problems at school and heads off to the super sleepover. The first-person narrative, interspersed with cartoon drawings, shows the third-grader's unique perspective on the challenges of school, friendship, and family. Short vignettes make this an approachable selection for new chapter book readers.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga Public Library System, OH
