Believe it or not, this book was written by a highly talented nine year old child! Young Khaya tells of best friends, a bothersome brother, a busy family and the seasons - and so much more. The poetry is phenomenal for such a young child and could be an inspiration to all children who fear writing their feelings on paper. Just Hanging Out is a Gold Medal winner and I have to say they got it right. As an adult reader, I was fascinated with the topics and how such a young girl put feelings and hints of the senses into her work. I would give this book as a gift but also think it should be in schools so that all children could use it as an inspiration to dare to try to do something different@
Khaya Dawn Klanot clearly expresses the definition of a real friend in her poem "A True Friend". In "A Rainbow of Moods", the author expresses the emotions and moods that she associates with colors. Parents will appreciate the words in "A Very Busy Family". "My Little Brother" expresses the author's love and understanding she has for her little brother. "Bubblegum" will have readers laughing. "Just Hanging Out" is a collection of poems for children written by nine-year-old Khaya Dawn Klanot. The poems cover a wide range of topics that will appeal to 7 to10 year olds. The book has colorful footprints that lead to entertaining prose. Each poem has a corresponding illustration. One of the unique features of this book is the relationship between who wrote and who illustrated it. This is collaboration between granddaughter and grandmother. Dr. Karen Pirnot and granddaughter, Khaya Dawn Klanot, worked closely together to create a book that will please all readers. Khaya is a talented poet. I look forward to reading more of her work.
This is a wonderful book of poems written by a nine year old girl. Some of the poems are: Bubble Gum; How the World Begin; What Music Means to Me; Walking Home; The Creature; Our Dance and Important Questions. These precious poems are written by a child so a child can easily read and understand them. And in this book, Dr. Pirnot is the illustrator. This is one talented family, the three sister and their children. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these seven books sent to me by Dr. Karen Hutchins Pirnot. And to have them signed by the children is so precious to me and I will always cherish them. And oh, my niece who is now 2 years and 9 months old LOVES these books, even though they are for older children. In all of Dr. Pirnot's children books, they are so well illustrated that a small child can look at the pictures and tell their own story and that is just what my niece Abbi does. Of course she says the books are hers! Thanks to all of your family Dr. Pirnot for entertaining Abbi through your books! This book would make a wonderful addition to your child's library. This book will give them an insight to reading poems, it will well educate them on the subjects of the poems, and it is just a great book to read to your child or for young readers to read. I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book to have. For an autograph copy of this book and other books by this author, visit her website. I want to thank the author Karen Hutchins Pirnot for providing a copy of this book for me to review. I was not expected or required to write a positive review.
