Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Lewin's light-splashed watercolors majestically fill each double-page spread of this splendid book. With close to photographic clarity, the artwork adroitly sets the scene for Borden's fine portrait of a Kentucky family following its beloved 100-year-old Christmas tradition of candy-making. Young Will Bryan impatiently awaits the moment that he and his cousins will help the adults make taffy on the porch. Though concerned about his dog, Luke, who has been missing for several days, Will sings carols along with the other Bryans and tries to believe Great Gram, who tells him that Luke will return in time for Christmas. A poignant story, sparely and smoothly told. Ages 4-8. (Oct.)
Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
The Bryans gather in Kentucky each Christmas to share the holidays the way the family has done for a hundred years. Will Bryan and his hunting dog, Luke, await the arrival of relatives and the perfect time to make the family's famous cream candy. Luke disappears, hopefully just because he's his own boss, but Will worries whether he will return by cream candy time. Watercolors evoke the chilly season and rural surroundings.
