Children's Literature
Harry and his sister Emily want to stay up for New Year's Eve. Dad agrees and the brother and sister duo decide that they have three nights to practice. Emily is still miffed that her brother snores, but they decide to be friends and cooperate to see if they can stay up until midnight. Their first attempt is to keep the room cold to keep them awake, and then they take naps so they can stay up later. None it of seems to work. On New Year's Eve, they practice celebrating. By 10 PM, Harry is asleep, but his snoring keeps Emily from dropping off to sleep. Suddenly she gets a great idea. Noise is the answer. Their clever solution makes it possible for the whole family to do the big countdown to midnight on New Year's Eve. Parents may find that kids of their own are going to try this solution, so be prepared. A Level Two (Reading Level 2.6) "Holiday House Reader" targeted to kids in Grades 1-2. 2004, Holiday House, Ages 5 to 7.

K-Gr 2-Two kittens want to stay awake to welcome in the new year, and their parents finally agree that they are old enough to do so. The real problem is, how to keep from falling asleep when their eyes are closing and the clock moves slowly. On the big night, they finally come up with a great idea. They set all of the alarm clocks to ring just in time for midnight. This enjoyable book deals with a subject with which many youngsters can identify. The story shows Harry and Emily playing games, reading books, and bantering about who is snoring at night. The colorful illustrations depict a comfortable house, and observant readers will notice many humorous touches (such as a cat's version of Matisse's The Dance). This is a fun story that beginning readers will enjoy at holiday time or any time it's important to stay up late.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
