Overview

Trumpeter Jeff Kaye is best known for his extensive work as a sideman in Ray Charles Orchestra, but on this studio effort as a leader, he returns to jazz, his first love. His band combines familiar names, including pianist John Campbell, Swiss bassist Isla Eckinger, drummer Paul Kreibich (the drummer in the final edition of the Gene Harris Quartet) with fellow Ray Charles Orchestra sideman George Harper on tenor sax, and newcomer Josh Nelson on piano (subbing for the unavailable Campbell during one session). Kaye's reworking of "Giant Steps," which he calls "Other Steps," alters Coltrane's original theme just enough to take it in a new direction, while his soft bossa nova "Sozinho" features his warm flugelhorn. Kreibich contributed "Partido in Mar Vista," a Brazilian-flavored work that would get any audience up and swaying along with it. Eckinger's mid-tempo hard bop vehicle "Two Deaf Lice" is based upon "Three Blind Mice," but its subtle connection may not be readily audible to the casual listener. Kaye also explores familiar works, including a powerful interpretation of "Everything I Have Is Yours," accompanied by the rhythm section alone, along with delivering an inspired performance of Dizzy Gillespie's infrequently played "That's Earl, Brother!" This very enjoyable session by Jeff Kaye will hopefully result in additional recording dates for the veteran trumpeter.
