Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

A child's adoration of a parent, a parent's unshakeable affection for his or her child: these timeless themes are the subjects of Dodd's (the Amazing Baby board books) made-for-snuggling, square-format series. The text is mediocre, as in this passage from No Matter What: "Sometimes you're happy./ Sometimes you're sad./ Sometimes you're good./ Sometimes you're bad.../ But no matter what you say or do, it makes no difference.../ I love you!" Instead, young children (and parents) will find pleasure in the large-scale art. Most of the fun and the cozy feelings these books promote come from watching the animal characters frolic or cuddle in occasionally forbidding habitats-Just Like Youstars a bear and cub in a northern wilderness, while No Matter Whatvisits an elephant and baby in the sun-baked savanna. The animals (and they are not gender-specific) have an endearing streamlined chunkiness that brings to mind tub toys, and Dodd deftly conjures up the disparate landscapes with minimal detailing and evocative texturing. She's especially good at conveying the beauty and expanse of African grasslands-a scene of rain falling in thin gray stripes looks almost like a Japanese textile; in another spread, the sky looms so near that the sun practically touches the horizon. These are worth a close look. Ages 1-up. (Mar.)

Children's Literature - Naomi Williamson
Dodd's simple, but actively charming, illustrations are all that is needed for this story to unfold. Using easy words, a little bear, as he/she wanders through the outdoors with one of its parents, tells just what it wants to be when it grows up. The little bear and the big bear show all the things a bear can do and the little bear understands that he/she wants to grow up to be just like Daddy or Mommy. An excellent choice for storytime and for bedtime, the illustrations and text team up to quietly encourage a child to be what he or she wants to be and to have the confidence to do just that. The padded cover, reinforced binding and thick pages are perfect for little fingers to handle as the child is read to or reads the story for her- or himself. Reviewer: Naomi Williamson

PreS- This warm, honest tribute to a child's love for a caring adult is almost flawless in its execution. Dodd's minimalist illustrations feature big, simple shapes with thick black outlines and blocks of complementary contrasting colors. The first spread appears on what normally qualify as endpapers. "When I grow up, I want to be...," says baby bear. Over the remaining pages the cub outlines the traits that he has acquired from the loving big bear that raises him. The sentiment comes across in just a few easy words at a time: "clever and funny," "wild and free," "big and strong." A sweet, soothing selection for bedtime sharing.-Catherine Threadgill, Charleston County Public Library, SC

Kirkus Reviews
While frolicking with one of his parents, a bear cub shares all his dreams. The phrase, "when I grow up, I want to be . . . " receives several answers: "clever and funny" and "big and strong," for starters. Through it all, the duo catches fish in a rushing stream, pads through the snow, swims in a pond, etc. In the end, nestled against the chest of the parent bear, the cub declares, "When I grow up, I want to be all the things that make me . . . me." The bold simplicity and simple shapes of the author's watercolor illustrations, the economy of the text and even the sturdiness and compact size of the physical book all increase access and appeal to very young prereaders. A warm and simple starter story. A companion, No Matter What (ISBN: 978-0-525-47932-1), while not as original, offers reassurance that Momma Elephant will love her baby no matter what.
