In 1813 single mother widow Countess Beatrice Campton chaperones her niece Emily to a masquerade party where she is dressed as Artemis. Marquess Thayne just back in England after eight years in India wants her boldly Gabriel tells Artemis that. They surrender to their desire sharing a pleasing tryst. Not long afterward, the latest catch of the season Gabriel searches for his masked lover as he knows she shared his passion as this is not JUST ONE OF THOSE FLINGS. He also surprisingly finds himself attracted to the standoffish older Beatrice especially when he looks into the heat her eyes emit. When Gabriel realizes that Beatrice, not a simpering debutante, is his beloved lover, he decides to go all out to make her his knowing full well the scandal that will percolate and even understands the difficulty of convince his beloved. He tries to persuade one of the card carrying Merry Widows that they can share a life together especially IN THE THRILL OF THE NIGHT if she would take a chance on love with his best weapon, kisses. --- Once again Candice Hern provides readers with a wonderful May-December regency romance filled with humor, wit, and romance as the catch of the season courts the Merry Widow. The story line is fast-paced however, the interrelationships between the fully developed cast (not just the lead couple) make for a fun intelligent historical. Fans will know the sub-genre is hale and hearty after reading Candice Hern¿s latest tale. --- Harriet Klausner

I read this book because I read the first book in the Merry Widows series and loved it. So my disappointment in this book was especially acute in light of that. The Merry Widows, 5 do-gooder widows, make a pact to take lovers but retain their independence by never remarrying. Beatrice decides to wait until the following season since she is far too busy chaperoning her niece this season. Still, at a masquerade ball she has a one night stand with a mysterious stranger. When she finds out his identity, she is appalled to learn that he is very same person she has been encouraging her niece to pursue, The Marquess of Thayne. They agree that Thayne will no longer pursue Beatrice's niece and that they will have a fling until the end of the season, when Thayne is scheduled to announce his betrothal. Of course, you can't always plan these things. The thing that disappointed me about this book was that there didn't seem to be much romance or love between the characters. They seemed to be driven mostly by lust. Beatrice had little care for Thayne and his accusation that she was simply using him as a sex toy seemed to ring very true. I won't spoil the resolution, but I didn't care for it. Seemed very contrived. The three Merry Widow books overlap in time and space and you have to read this book to fully appreciate the final book in the series which went back to form with the first novel in the series. For that reason alone, I would read this book.

I really enjoyed this book, it was better than the first merry widows, because the sex scenes were more explicit and had more sex sex scenes. Highly Reccommend. Thayne was Hot Hot Hot.

This book started caught your interest and is for any reader who believes in love! The main character Beatrice is a woman who belongs to a group of widows who all swear "NEVER to marry again". SO you know that they will meet someone special! It's the awakening of their love and their surprise and delight at what love really feels like that is fun! At first I thought the character shallow but kept with it and watched her grow and bloom when she learned what love was really about! This was a great read and I was sorry when I was finished.

A surprisingly good read. Full of witty and charming characters with equally good dialogue. It rarely fell into the trap of cliche adjectives and swooning females, which made it all the better. The book could have been much better with a different ending. It felt forced and abrupt, but nevertheless a worthy read.

A masked ball provides the opportunity for Artemis and a Maharajah to have a close encounter that ends with her fleeing into the night, leaving her lover befuddled. However, the man behind the Indian mask is Gabriel, the Marquess of Thayne, and is most determined to get what, or rather, who he wants. When he meets Beatrice Sommerfield, a recent, young widow who is chaperoning her niece's Season, his thoughts become divided between his mystery lady and the lady, until he realizes, they are one. Beatrice does not want a husband, and Thayne is looking for a wife. She tries to set him up with her niece, but they are not a good match, and he has interest in one woman only, her. .................... ** Though there is nothing new, profound, or especially imaginative here, fans of this series or author will undoubtedly find it enjoyable. **

The second in the series of books about widows taking lovers but ultimately finding love. I found this to be excellent. The first book was a bit of a conventional in that how could she love someone other than her dead husband, but this one was novel in that it was her independence that kept her from love. This book acknowledges that older is wiser and sexier, and this one is sexy from start to finish.
