Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Little Critter needs a new skateboard and he learns from his dad that it takes money to get a new one. They check out Little Critter's savings and see that he does not have near enough, so Little Critter decides that he will earn money. He makes a list of chores that he can do, but they seems to create more problems than help: he spills the dog food and drops dishes taken out of the dishwasher. Then he does clean his room and sells lemonade to fill his money jar. Dad takes him to the bank where Little Critter opens a savings account (this story has him getting a passbook, but I don't think many banks issue them any more). His coins go into a coin counter and the deposit is made, but Little Critter still does not have enough money. He continues to do chores and keeps adding money to his savings account. Finally he has enough to go to the store to buy a new skateboard, but here the story takes a bit of a twist. Those familiar with Mayer's other books will find this one just as charming and the lesson about earning and saving for something that you want is a good one. A "My First Shared Reading" in the larger "I Can Read" series. Notes to parents, teachers and caregivers are found on the first page as well as a description of the series on the back cover.
