Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Unlike many other experts, chef-cum-physician Harlan (public TV's Dr. Gourmet) discounts the effects of genes, hormones, and neurotransmitters on weight, contending that shedding pounds means eating fewer, better-quality calories. But the first recipe in this food-focused title—fettuccini Alfredo—should reassure readers that his six-week diet (with eight weeks of meals and recipes) is not about deprivation. In this accessible guidebook, Harlan helps readers to achieve daily goals (planning meals and snacks, organizing a pantry, limiting convenience foods, keeping a food and exercise diary) as they learn to cook tasty Mediterranean diet dishes, a variety of ethnic favorites, and comfort foods. While Harlan's suggested two- to four-pound loss per month might pale before fad-diet promises, his solutions are simple (drinking a pre-meal glass of water, bringing lunch from home, measuring ingredients, exercising moderately) and his recipes, satisfying. Harmon, aka "Dr. Gourmet," is medical director at the Tulane University School of Medicine and a chef. He combines his experience in both fields to devise a practical diet plan. Most diets focus primarily on telling people what not to eat. Harmon instead advises readers on what they should be eating and why. The eight-week diet plan includes goals for each week and meal plans for every day of the two-month regimen. Recipes are included for each day's dinner, but a convenience-meal option and a restaurant-meal option are provided as well. Throughout the book, tips are offered for gauging portion size, choosing foods, and reading labels; such tips will help readers change their eating habits and continue to eat healthfully after the eight-week period. VERDICT This book offers a different approach than other diet books on the market in addition to valuable health information. Recommended for public libraries and anyone looking to lose weight and adopt healthy food practices.—Lisa Felix, Mishawaka-Penn-Harris P.L., IN
Kirkus Reviews

A diet plan that focuses on what you can eat, not what you can't.

Harlan (eatTHISdiet for Coumadin Users, 2008, etc.) actually tells readers exactly what to eat in this diet manual. His six-week program to achieve optimal health through diet and nutrition relies on "high quality calories" and self-prepared meals that take cues from Mediterranean cuisine. The author isn't only a board-certified internist but a trained chef as well, and the man behind the popular website DrGourmet.com. His manual is a winning, easily implemented blend of medically sound weight-loss advice and recipes for delicious, nutritious food. In each chapter, Harlan sets goals, explains what to expect and supplies readers with exact recipes and shopping lists. Clear, simple directives tell readers not only what to eat, but when, how and why. For Harlan, a self-proclaimed lover of food, taste is just as important as nutritional value. Readers may be surprised to find that the first dinner on Harlan's meal plan is Fettuccini Alfredo with Shrimp and Broccoli; pizza and dessert are on the menu as well.

Recommended for those who need meal-by-meal guidance and aren't willing to forgo their favorite foods—the perfect marriage of medical knowledge and gourmet cooking.
