Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Stephen M Fines, MD (Mt. Sinai Hospital Medical Center)
Description: This is a presentation of what are felt to be the key facts from each chapter of the parent text, Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide, 5th Edition (McGraw Hill, 1999). It is presented in an outline as opposed to text form.
Purpose: The book is designed to be used as a quick review for written board or in-service exams or for a general review. This is a worthwhile purpose in a field where many similar books come up short. With the understanding that things are inevitably left out of any summary, this book does a very good job of including that which is important and presenting it in a concise format.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is aimed primarily at emergency medicine attendings and residents who are preparing for either their written board or in-service training exam. It is my opinion that it also serves well as a quick general purpose review, and would be potentially useful for medical students interested in emergency medicine. The primary authors are well known and respected in the field.
Features: Each chapter presents material from the parent text in an outline form. For each topic, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and differential as well as emergency department care and disposition are discussed. The organization of the chapters is consistent and easy to read, with good use of graphics. Given the quality of the parent text, the scope of material covered is complete.
Assessment: This is a very enjoyable book to read. The amount of material in each chapter is good, with just the key facts included and the fluff removed. The concise and consistent format makes it easy and quick to read. It will likely become a popular companion to the fifth edition of Tintinalli.
