Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Beginning a series of small books spun off from Covey's The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, this story demonstrates the first of the seven habits, “Be Proactive: You're in Charge,” which is explained further in a “Parents' Corner.” Pokey the Porcupine, who lives in the town of 7 Oaks, is picked on at school because of the quills on his back. Though some of Pokey's friends are supportive (“You're a porcupine—you're supposed to have quills”), Pokey must learn to appreciate his unique qualities for himself. Pokey's story is a little thin, but the discussion questions may help concerned parents. Also available: When I Grow Up. Ages 2–6. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
Biff Beaver says to Pokey Porcupine, "Hey, Pokey. Your quills look like a pile of toothpicks." Pokey is upset, but his friends say good things about his quills. After thinking about it, Pokey decides he likes himself the way he is. The next time Biff says something, Pokey walks away. Pokey decides he likes his quills so much he decorates them with glitter. Then Biff is envious. This is the first in the series: "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids." This first habit is: "Be Proactive: You're in Charge." The other six habits are identified on the back cover. A note encourages parents to prepare their children for possible bullying. "We can't control what others say or do to us. But we can control what we do about it." Discussion questions and steps for a child to deal with bullying are in-cluded. End papers have a map of the village of Seven Oaks where Pokey lives. The cartoon-like water colors are fun. Parents and teachers will find this helpful to talk with young children about bullying. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
School Library Journal
K-Gr 1—Pokey is hurt when Biff the Beaver mocks his quills by saying they "look like a pile of toothpicks." The porcupine's friends try to cheer him up, but it is only when he looks at his reflection in a creek that he does an about-face. He finds that he likes himself just the way he is and shows off his quills by gluing glitter onto the tips. The story concludes with Biff wishing he had quills. Back matter has a "Parents' Corner" and discussion questions. The plot is simplistic and contrived. The cartoon illustrations are pleasant but do little to elevate the story. Readers may feel cheated by the abrupt ending and the relative ease with which Pokey goes from feeling down to feeling up, which rarely happens in real-life bullying situations.—Beth Cuddy, Seward Elementary School, Auburn, NY

    Good Reminder to Habit 1

I like the fact that Just The Way I Am was a reminder to kids and parents about Habit 1- "Be Proactive: You're in Charge". The illustrations are cute, just like When I Grow Up, also by Sean Covey, but the "Parent's Corner" at the end sounds a little condescending. The shift from the kid genre to adult isn't smooth. I do, however, like the message here and think that the main ideas and concepts are good reminders, to everyone, of core values.
