Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Rainbow Fish creator Marcus Pfister has crafted a novel ode to self-acceptance in Just the Way You Are, trans. by Marianne Martens. Throughout, die-cut pages picture animals envious of other animals: Lion would like to have Toucan's beak, Toucan would like to be as big and strong as Elephant. But in the end, the animals accept their individual qualities. The Spanish-language edition Somos como somos, trans. by Ariel Almohar, is also available. Children's Literature
Written for the young, but meaningful for anyone at any age, this book by Swiss artist and writer Marcus Pfister is a delight—from its cut-out cover to its final two-page spread of fantastic creatures. In the tale, which loses nothing in translation, one jungle animal asks another whether he is going to a party that evening. Each feels the need to put on the best feature of another animal-friend before attending, and the author/illustrator imagines each odd hybrid by using overlapping, die-cut images that are convincing and sure to tickle any funny bone. When the animals finally gather for the fete, they admit their mutual admiration for one another and laugh at the strange pictures their self-doubt conjured up. Each vows to the other, I will appreciate you "just the way you are." Painted, as they are, on textured, cloth-like surfaces, these watercolors are warm and wonderful with the look of fine tapestry. The animals' obvious merriment, the enjoyment they take in one another, their innocent but mischievous eyes and their free-roaming imaginations will pull the young reader irresistibly in to share caring, happy friendships. One of those rare reads that can be equally savored by the reader and the one read to. 2002, North-South Books,

School Library Journal
PreS-K-A gentle, predictable tale. As a series of animals discusses an upcoming party, each one worries that he is not special enough for anyone to care whether or not he attends, and longs for a friend's characteristics. Each animal reassures the other, "That would be fun to see!- But I like you just the way you are," before turning to the next friend with the same insecurity he just dismissed in another. In the end, they all attend the festivities, and they "laughed and laughed as they imagined how they would have looked if their wishes had come true." While the story is nothing new, the full-color illustrations bring whimsy to the otherwise rather plodding narrative. Die-cut pages give a glimpse of a hedgehog with the curly tail of a chameleon, a toucan with the trunk of an elephant, and so on. The texture of the canvas gives depth to the art. This book is an acceptable choice for teachers looking for titles on self-esteem and self-acceptance, though Keiko Kasza's The Pigs' Picnic (1988; o.p.) and A Mother for Choco (1992, both Putnam) accomplish the same goal with more warmth and humor.-Martha Link, Louisville Free Public Library, KY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Perhaps the animals should have decided on a costume party instead of a "come-as-you-are" soiree. The irrepressible Pfister's (Rainbow Fish to the Rescue, not reviewed, etc.) new outing plays peekaboo with animals' faces as they get ready for a party by worrying over their looks. The story circles through the anxious participants as they long for features they admire on other animals. Lion wants a toucan's beak, elephant wants to hop like a kangaroo, and all the rest of them cover more fashion anxieties than you'd find at a typical school dance. But of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in the end, each is convinced to show up in his own natural glory. Pfister uses die-cut pages to humorously show the mix-and-match fantasies. His thematically colored illustrations are soft and simply highlighted with the texture of canvas board coming through. Young children are subtly reassured by the repetition of the natural faces stamped quietly in the background of each page and listening to the repetitions of language in the storytelling. There couldn't be any more to enhance the package. In addressing one of childhood's basic insecurities, Pfister has produced an engaging work which children and adults will raptly appreciate "just the way it is." (Picture book. 5-8)
