Overview

When it comes to gorgeous, tight harmonies, family members always seem capable of outshining singers without matching DNA. The Cox Family -- dad Willard and children Suzanne, Sidney, and Evelyn -- use their genetic goods to pile brilliant harmonies on top of Suzanne's lilting Dolly Parton-like lead vocals. On JUST WHEN YOU'RE THINKING IT'S OVER, the Coxes place traditional bluegrass and country numbers like Del McCoury's "I Feel the Blues Moving In" and Hank Williams's "I Just Don't Like This Kind of Living" alongside much riskier fare. Del Shannon's "Runaway," for instance, gets a string-band makeover, and a version of the Motown classic "That's the Way Love Is" tests the limits of just how funky bluegrass can be. Sidney and Suzanne also contribute a quartet of lovely, understated originals. This Louisiana foursome has a healthy respect for the past, but their eyes are squarely on the future.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jack Leaver
The smooth and effortless vocal blend of the Cox Family make this a pleasurable experience throughout. And although their angelic four-part harmonies are based in bluegrass, to categorize the family in that genre solely, would be to pigeonhole them. The performances here also mix in country, gospel and a touch of blues, with top-notch session players providing a sound foundation that employs electric, as well as acoustic instruments and includes producer Alison Krauss' fiddle and viola playing on a couple of cuts. All four family members take turns singing lead, and there isn't a weak link in the group, nor a weak song on the album. Highlights include a great bluegrass reworking of Del Shannon's 1961 hit "Runaway" and the beautiful ballad "Nothing Else I Can Do," penned by Sidney and Suzanne Cox.
