Overview

New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards is back with an exhilarating romantic thriller that will leave readers breathless.

Feisty criminal attorney Jessica Ford has done her best to comply with the orders of the Secret Service’s unofficial witness protection program ever since she became the lone witness to the First Lady’s murder. She changed her name, dyed her dark hair blonde, and traded her sturdy black-rimmed glasses for contact lenses. Unfortunately, winning her first high-profile case for prestigious Washington, D.C., law firm Ellis Hayes, and subsequently landing her face all over the news, is not exactly “keeping a low profile.” Or so says hunky Secret Service agent Mark Ryan, whose newest assignment—despite Jess’s stubborn protests—is keeping her safe at all costs. It just so happens he’s also her ex-boyfriend.

The trial earns Jess a permanent spot on the firm’s elite legal defense team, replacing an associate who eloped suddenly and never came back. It’s the chance of a lifetime. But Jess’s mind has raced with questions from the moment the prosecution’s star witness shocked the courtroom with an electrifying revelation involving the handsome son of a powerful U.S. senator. Was the pretty, young mother intimidated into changing her story on the stand? Why will she not return Jess’s calls? Did Jess’s ambitious predecessor on the case really just abandon her successful career? Or did both women mysteriously disappear?

After Mark rescues Jess from an attacker outside her apartment, she begins to consider the possibility that she is a target. Maybe it’s not so bad to have her irresistibly charming and hard-bodied former lover around for protection. Maybe. The question is, which of the many inadvertent enemies Jess has made recently is he protecting her from? The investigation leads her to some startling coincidences—and to a teenage runaway who may just hold the missing link . . . if Jess can find her.

As Jess hurtles closer to the truth—and the sexual tension between her and Mark grows hotter than ever—she finds herself in a race against the clock to find the answers before what she doesn’t know gets them both killed.

    Disappointing

I was very disappointed in this book. Maybe for those under 25 years old it would be good. It's the same old girl hates/loves guy, she's nasty to him, he keeps coming back for more, etc. etc. That dialogue is almost 3/4 of the book. Geez............

Karen Robards provides a superlative thriller

Attorney Allison Howard agrees to marry her lover Greg Sullivan. They race to her house so she packs a suitcase and has something to wear as they go to Vegas to tie the knot. Unknown to both of them, two runaways from juvenile institution Shelter House are hiding under the bed when Greg snaps Allison's neck. The youngsters flee from the house, but Greg sees them.

Jessica Ford is in court working a high profile rape case in which the accused is a senator's son. While questioning the victim Tiffany Higgs, she suddenly admits to lying; saying she had consensual sex with Rob Phillips. The lawyers are so pleased with Jessica's win that she is transferred to the sixth floor working on a high profile layer's team. Secret Service Agent Mark Ryan returns into Jessica's life because one of the men who knew the First Lady's death was murder has been killed. Mark fears someone is tying up loose ends with Jess and him the remaining witnesses. He plans to keep her safe and hopes she gives him a second chance as several attempts on her life occur.

This legal thriller is filled with action yet readers get to know and understand the myriad of emotions of the prime protagonists. The key to exhilarating tale is that the readers senses the romance in the air everywhere the pair appears, but it is cleverly kept in the background of the suspense as a deadly assassin is coming for Jessica and Rob. With several other strong subplots that blend into the prime story line, Karen Robards provides a superlative thriller.

    Justice

Criminal attorney Jessica Ford is the Secret Service's witness protection program after being the only survivor and witness to the murder of the First Lady. But she doesn't relocate and after replacing a former associate that left on a high profile case that gets her notice, someone is out to kill her. Little does anyone know (except two runaway teenagers), the associate was murdered also.

Karen Robard's tale of legal intrigue and the powers that be makes for one gripping novel. There is tense moments, romance and lots of action. I was a little let done with the climax but the ending made me let that pass.

Not as good as first in sequel

Did not enjoy this #2 novel as much as I did #1 Pursuit which read a while back. The book leads off with a murder witnessed by two runaway girls. It then jumps to a trial continued from the first book. Jessica, criminal attorney has been in witness protection program since the witness to First Lady’s murder. Her secret service agent Mark (ex-boyfriend) is cool, but Jess is drama queen. She wins the case after the girl on the stand backs off from the rape case of the son of US senator. Goes back and forth between the two and back to the runaway teens who hold the key.

    Disappointing ending

I liked most of the book but the ending was a bit too far fetched and I felt disappointed with how everything was tied up so quickly at the end. I also thought some of the characters actions were too unbelievable or out of character. Definitely not her best book.

    Highly recommended

I love Karen Robards , and I really loved this book...it was nice to see characters from other books! The only thing that I did not like was how she ended the story...even so I really enjoyed revisiting these characters and I thought it was well worth my time!!

    Review

ROBARDS is a great writer, this book was not her best. It seems as if she is trying to write two books and then merge , taking a long time to connect the two plots into one. I will always recommend the author, as her goodbooks outweigh her bad.

    Enjoyable quick read

Not the greatest character development and it's quite predictable. However, the writing style makes the book easy to read and a bit of a page turner. For 0.99 its a good deal and worth the time to read. Not great or wonderful, but a good read.
