Overview

From the moment 'N Sync dropped their bubblegum-pop debut in 1998, it was obvious that blond charmer Justin Timberlake would be the boy band's breakout star. Four years later, Timberlake finally kicks off his solo career with 2002's surprisingly soulful, R&B-and hip-hop-drenched Justified. Vocally, the Tennessee native sounds more than ever like his idol, Michael Jackson, most noticeably on the pulsating, Neptunes-produced single, "Like I Love You," where Timberlake even yelps à la Jacko. In all, the Neptunes helped craft about half of the disc's 13 songs, including the string- and-synth-laden "Last Night" and the disco-inspired "Rock Your Body." For the rest, Timberlake looked primarily to hip-hop kingpin Timbaland, who applied his trademark techniques to the slinky, bass-heavy club thumper "(And She Said) Take Me Now," featuring Janet Jackson, and the dramatic, synth-and-beat box-accented original "Cry Me a River," on which a wronged Justin -- who puts his own lyrical stamp on most of the songs -- takes potshots at an ex, possibly Britney Spears. In his shimmering falsetto, he sings: "You don't have to say what you did/I already know/I found out from him." Oops, looks like Brit did it again. While Justified is obviously conceived as a springboard to grown-up, international superstardom, Timberlake doesn't completely forsake his core audience, closing the disc with the syrupy, Brian McKnight-produced ballad, "Never Again," on which he once again bemoans lost love. " 'Forgive me' says that I should give you one more try/But it's too late/It's over now," he coos, and one can already imagine an accompanying, sepia-tone video astride the TRL countdown. Whether he's singing the teen-pop breakup blues or conjuring images of Jackson in his prime, Timberlake assures that his ascent to solo stardom is more than Justified.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
With his debut solo album, Justified, Justin Timberlake borrows from Michael Jackson, from the Thriller-era getup and poses to the sharply modernized spin on the classic Off the Wall sound. To be sure, the sound of the Neptunes productions which dominate Justified is the best thing about the album; they have a lush, sexy, stylish feel that is better, more romantic than most modern R&B. Timberlake is a technically skilled vocalist, with a smooth falsetto. The songs are pretty on the surface -- apart from some flop Timbaland productions (which he redeems with the slinky funk of "Right for Me"), the sound of Justified works well.
Rolling Stone - Ben Ratliff
The Neptunes' brilliant, impertinent, full-body funk is, for the most part, what stays with you from Justified; their songs, spacious and shot through with ecstatic aaahs, outshine their neighbors on the album.
Entertainment Weekly - David Browne
His smooth falsetto is an easy fit for the slinky quirks and rhythmic accents of the Neptunes and Timbaland, who produced the bulk of the album. [B]
Daily News - Jim Farber
In most tracks, springy beats and original sound effects give the songs surprising texture and distinction.

i ENJOYED THE CD ALOT. YOU ARE BETTER OFF BY YOURSELF BECAUSE WHEN YOU WAS WITH n'SYNC THE GROUP SUCKED. I DIDN'T EVEN GET NONE OF YOUR GROUPS CD. YOU DID GREAT WITH GETTING THE RIGHT PRODUCERS TO DO THE CD.THE BEST PRODUCER WHO DID GREAT ON THE BEATS WAS PHARRELL AND TIMBALAND.I LOVE THAT SONG "TAKE IT FROM HERE" AND "RIGHT FOR ME".THE BEAT WAS LIKE BANANAS!!!!!!KEEP ON BEING A SOUL ARTIST AND FORGET N'SYNC.

Justin Timberlake's Justified is a beauitful collection of soul, art, sex and style. This is one of the best albums this fall. Most of the tracks are R&B and are to die for. Each song has it's own breakdown, which comes into the middle of each song that changes your life. I can relate so well to every one of his songs, since he and I share the same sign AQUARIUS. I feel that if i recorded an album it would sound like Justified. I want the whole world to hear this album. SO, just check out Justified and feel the bliss. Keep up the good work Justin & pass me the ball!

Im not a fan of Justin Timberlake or N'Sync however my girlfriend is (What a surprise huh) But I must say, Although I dont particularly enjoy his music "Justified" has a much more mature vibe to it than his previous work with N'Sync. He is a talented vocalist and although I dont "feel" his kind of music I can appreciate it. Aside from a few tracks where he goes overboard with the high notes it is tolerable.. And for me to give him that much credit is saying something.

There truly isn't a bad track on this album. When I found out that Timbaland & the Neptunes were gonna be responsible for this album, I knew how good it could be. And, man, does this album deliver! "Cry Me A River" has got to be one of Timbaland's best tracks and Justin sings the heck out of it. The Neptunes turn in an ingenious lo-fi production in "Like I Love You" and the results are sublime. The Neptunes are by far the most adventurous producers on this album but Timbaland is the funkiest. Brian McKnight paints by numbers at the end but Brian McKnight's at his worst (which he certainly isn't here) is better than most producers on a good day. The Underdogs do an admiral job with their offering. Overall, an amazing debut listen from an artist who knew exactly what he was doing. Makes you wonder what the equally-talented JC Chasez' solo album will sound like. In the end, you almost wonder to yourself... "N-who??"

...I never expected any of it to be good, because of N*Sync's disappointing music, but I was pleasantly surprised by a few of the songs such as Senorita, but I was rather annoyed by most of the songs' lack of beat, or substance, like Never Again. That song was extremely whiney and had rather immature lyrics. I wouldn't buy this CD, I'll just listen to the radio for the few that are actually good.

THIS CD IS THIS BOYS COMING OUT PARTY HE WAS GOOD WITH N'SYNC AND THEY WERE GOOD BUT THIS BOY IS TRUE R&B HIP HOP IN HIS HEART AND THAT IS WHAT HE DOES HERE HE SHOWS US THE JUSTIN HE HAS HAD TO COVER UP FOR SO LONG. HE LEFT BRITNEY AND HIS CAREER IS SOARING WHILE HERS IS GETTING FURTHER AND FURTHER PLAYED OUT. HE IS BLOWING UP AND SHE IS PRETTY FADING AWAY. CD IS SMOOTH AND HIS LYRICS ARE TRUE. ITS A HIT.

Justin tries too hard to be like Michael Jackson...i mean c'mon...stop the impersonation...all of his songs sound a like...i mean the neptune beats are off the chain and all but there is just too much! Next time keep it real J.

With a style and flare that any music fan could love, Justin Timberlake brings to music what Michael Jackson's Invincible album could only hope to be. It delivers raw and fresh beats over a soothing voice that only this former NSYNCer can produce. If you love R&B, Michael Jackson and of course Justin Timberlake than you'll love this album. But even if you don't I strongly recomemend picking this one up; it's one of the years best!

I must admit that I was a little skeptical- I wasn't the biggest fan of N*SYNC, it had too much of a typical boy band appeal. So I assumed Justin would come out with that same teeny-bopper sound. Boy, was I wrong! I truly cannot bring myself to take that CD out of my CD player!!! And it belongs to a friend, so now I need to buy my own! I especially love the song "Cry Me A River". I was just getting through a tough time with a break-up type situation... and hearing this song helped me to move on. It sounded like it was written for me! The other songs are great, too, very very catchy. I HIGHLY recommend you go buy it- I know I am!!!

Immimating MJ, or trying to immimate someone who is the King of Pop is total wrong, espcially, when it's done so poorly! So Save your money! Unless You like to hear the sound of someone's voice screaching. It's so poorly done. This Album get's an F-.

This CD is awesome! Justin definitly variated himself. Hip-hop, a little rap, definitely dance...perfect for a party! With a little Old School mixed in, it's definitly my favorite CD yet. I'm sure that his solo career, although it may not last long, depending on the group, will be a success. Way to go Justin! Congratulations!

Justin really separated himself from his past with 'NSYNC. Even though his album sort of has the same feel, it is definitely an expression of who is and who he wants to be.

wow im impressed!I never realy liked Nsync but I LLLLOOOOOOVVVVEEEE this album!Rock your body and Cry me aRiver are some of my fav songs!Props Justin!!!!!!!!~!~! BUY THIS ALBUM!GO-NOW- BUY IT!!!!!

Ok, so maybe I'm extremely biased because I am an *NSYNC fan, but the music off of "Justified" is completely different from the usual "*NSYNC-type" and Justin's voice is absolutely amazing. This album is definitely geared to an older audience and no matter what any other reviewers say, it definitely is worth the buy! :)

Get his CD. He has great talent, can really sing, and is soooo!!!! CUTE. His songs are so impressive. I can't believe he done it without the rest of the group. Going solo thats the thing. I really love TAKE IT FROM HERE, LIKE I LOVE YOU, LAST NIGHT, NOTHING ELSE, TAKE ME NOW, ROCK YA BODY, RIGHT FOR ME, SENORITA, and others. Boy, if you just love listening to beautifully composed music GET THE CD!!!!!!! And for all you girls who just love him he is MINE!!!!!!!

Justin Timberlake prove that he is just not a "boyband" member. He truly show that he has the talent to step out on his own!

Justin's new solo album rocks! It's one of my favorite albums and I love all the songs in it. And I also recommend all of you to buy it, 'cause this album is really one of the best, also good luck to Justin on his new solo career!

Hey!! Justin is obviously a cutie, but he has brains too!! Not to mansion an awesome voice. This boy can sing!! Let me tell yah. When I first heard that he was going solo, I ran to the store to see if his CD was out, and it was so I bought it. I couldn't stop listening to it! He has just this sweetheart voice that you would want singing you to sleep at night, every night!! He has always been my favorite of the five N'SYNC guys. Now he has gone solo and is better that ever. He wrote most of the songs for the band, and in this CD he wrote all. His sweet lyrics are just amazing. He has such talent and shows off his stuff in this album. I can't wait for his next!! He is one of the best singers out there so you definitely have to give him props for that. If you buy this CD you won't only see his boyish looks, but his sick voice too!!

First of all I'm a huge Justin Timberlake/NSYNC fan; I believe they are very soulful and talented. Okay, so I've been anticipating this album for a very long time. (Even before he made the formal announcement.) I knew it was going to be good, but not this good. I was completely blown away...practically floored. I mean, the vibe of the album is such a new sound, it's different from anything else that is out right now; but you can definitely tell that it has an ol' school influence...there is no album like this out right now and I don't think anyone can or could have pulled this off besides Justin. The production and lyrics are amazing. I love "Like I Love You" but I do believe it's the weakest song on the album. That's how amazing Justified is, I would recommend this to anyone...actually I am recommending it to everyone I know.

This should win for album of the year at this upcoming grammy's. It is one of my favorite albums and Justin is a way better artist outside of NSYNC. He truly has unique good songs on it, and should gain respect for his music more than for what he has done and what he looks like. That's what he said he wanted people to do in a Rolling Stone article. Only a few songs aren't that great, but the rest is excellent. This is an album you have to own.

My daughter and I both enjoy Justin's music. With or without Nsync he has a wonderful voice. Good job Justin! This cd is a little more sexier than Nsync's albums, so I would not recommend to any under thirteen.
