Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
With his self-titled debut, American Idol's first-season heartthrob Justin Guarini proves that nice guys don't always finish last. Sometimes they finish second, which suits the mop-topped singer just fine. On the teen-friendly R&B- and pop-driven disc, it's clear why the charismatic-yet-vocally limited Guarini lost to the powerhouse pipes of Kelly Clarkson. But with pop legend Clive Davis and veteran producers including Babyface at the helm, Guarini's falsetto is tweaked to new heights. 'Face co-wrote and co-produced several tracks, including the playful, Tyrese-reminiscent single "I Saw Your Face" while Soulshock & Karlin check in with the infectious, Michael Jackson ringer "Sorry." That said, the 23-year-old is glaringly out of his league on a dreadful cover of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" sung flawlessly during American Idol's second season by runner-up Clay Aiken, and "Inner Child" has all the makings of a soccer anthem. Still, the Doylestown, Pennsylvania, native redeems himself on two winning Babyface ballads -- the Brian McKnight–penned "Condition of My Heart and "Thinking of You," co-written by Justin Timberlake. Wisely, the disc closes with "Timeless," a dynamic duet with Clarkson -- readying fans for their forthcoming movie musical, From Justin to Kelly. With American Idol's popularity still soaring, this record is Justin time.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Arriving a discreet amount of time after American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson's chart-topping debut, Thankful, and just before the release of their movie, From Justin to Kelly, Justin Guarini's self-titled album is, at the very least, positioned for almost certain success on a massive scale. Fortunately, though, Justin Guarini has more than just marketing and calculation going for it -- much like Thankful, the album is much better than might be expected, providing a smooth transition from his AmIdol roots into more adventurous musical territory. Of course, "adventurous" is a relative term when it comes to crafting an album that must appeal to as many different types of people as possible. At times, it just means putting a crunchy, slightly urban beat behind his signature American Idol songs like "Unchained Melody" and "Get Here" to give them a bit of an "edge" without straying too far from mainstream pop territory. But considering that RCA could probably sell millions of copies of an album that featured nothing but songs like these, the musical risks that Guarini does take are welcome and work surprisingly well. Most of the album takes its cue from urban and teen pop; indeed, songs like "Be a Heartbreaker," "I Saw Your Face," and "Thinking of You" mix those styles so seamlessly that they suggest what Justin Timberlake's Justified might've sounded like if he'd had a less forward-thinking production team than the Neptunes at the helm. Likewise, Justin Guarini's most progressive-sounding tracks, such as "Sorry," recall the futuristic spin on Michael Jackson's Off the Wall that the other Justin's album offered. Though it nods to Latin pop with "One Heart Too Many," the majority of the album sticks to an urban/teen pop/mainstream pop fusion that plays to Guarini's strengths as a performer and a persona, which is a savvy decision by the people behind American Idol. Along with its similarities to the variety shows of the '60s and '70s, the series' star-making process recalls old Hollywood's star system, where teams of experts would mold promising newcomers into archetypal performers, refining everything from their looks to the way they walked and talked. American Idol's team cast Kelly Clarkson as the girl next door who occasionally takes a walk on the wild side, and Guarini has been cast as a relatively chaste sex symbol. Granted, this role has been around since pop music's infancy, but on Justin Guarini the singer occasionally seems overly confined by it, particularly on the limp ballad "Condition of My Heart" and the album's low point, the cloyingly up-tempo "Inner Child." It's a little strange that Guarini's sex appeal is curtailed as much as it is, since he was generally considered the sexiest or at least, most conventionally sexy of the finalists, and also since Thankful made a point of emphasizing Clarkson's sexiness in a classy way. When Guarini does get to let loose, it makes for some of the album's best moments, such as "Doin' Things We're Not Supposed to Do," a sultry song that sounds both appropriate for a pop star in his early twenties to sing and for his preteen fans to hear; "If You Wanna" is a tougher, more urban-flavored song that is all the more promising because Guarini co-wrote it. In the end, this album isn't as surprising or diverse a debut as Thankful was, but its solid quality proves that the forces behind American Idol want their winners to make good pop albums, as opposed to one mega-hit single backed by 11 throwaway tracks. Justin Guarini might be calculated, but it's not cynical.

    JUST BAD

When he wrote that song "sorry" he really meant to say that he was sorry for singing all these songs

    I expected better

I was very surprised when I heard this album. After listening to Kelly I was waiting for Justin to come out and blow me away. Now that I heard the cd I found that his voice didnt ring through, most of the songs seemed the same. He has the potential to be a great singer but really, this cd left me disapointed.

More than I expected from an American Idol runner-up !!

Amazing tracks !! The CD isn't out yet but I got to hear a few tracks from pickthehits.com. And so far, I'm impressed! It wasn't what I expected. I thought the album will be all about POP and cheesy songs I've heard from the show. But no, not at all. I love the soulful, R&B vibe in Justin Guarini's new songs I Saw Your Face and Heartbreaker. I also love One Heart Too Many which has a latin beat. The song Sorry is so wild and edgy and the vocals are amazing. I even love the new version of Get Here. I can't wait to get the CD and hear the rest of the songs !!

    Justin Guarini

This CD is a breath of fresh air for the music industry! Justin Guarini may have lost the American Idol "crown" to Miss Clarkson, but he WINS with this CD!! Sorry is a very unique song, One Heart Too Many gives off a Latin vibe and Inner Child is a fun, "throw your hands in the air" kind of song. There are three remakes, Get Here, the song that made Justin a household name, gets a different mix, Inner Child, and Unchained Melody. There is something for everyone on this debut album, pop, soul, R&B, Latin and good ol' fun! This CD is gonna be a HIT!

    JUST IN TIME

After a long wait, Justin's CD has FINALLY arrived. Great stuff! I've heard several tracks from pickthehits. Although Justin tackles different genres, he retains his distinctive style. These tracks allow Justin to showcase his incredible voice. He has incredible phrasing/timing and a hypnotic voice. "Sorry" is deliciously original. Very interesting background beat, great intro, nice "mood building" throughout the song...Great bridge. I NEVER get tired on this song! Also, love the "message". On "One Heart too Many", Justin experiments with the Latin flavor. Very sensual. Nice rhythm. Catchy beat and lyrics. Justin shows that "vulnerability" prevalent in the popular Latin artists. I absolutely LOVE "I Saw Your Face". SO sensual. Love the studio effect (echo). So effective! Nice sultry background beat. Great R&B vibe. Both "Be a Heartbreaker" and "How Will I Know" are so romantic. You just melt listening to these two songs. Wow! A guy who understands women! Thank you! A guy who knows exactly what women want to hear! His two cover tracks, "Get Here" and "Unchained Melody" are quite beautiful..you will treasure these two tracks. This version of "Get Here" is totally different than any of Justin's previous versions. This version is very low-key, very soulful. I love his harmonizing in "Unchained Melody". You hear it, but it's very subtle. Quite beautiful. Soothing. It draws you in...Has a "floating" quality. His "Inner Child" can simply be defined as fun and joyful. It's a taste of absolute freedom. It may not quite "fit" with the style of some of the other tracks, but he does give it his "Justin touch". Justin has a very distinctive voice and a personal style, so he makes each song his own. I really can't wait to hear the rest of his CD. Love how he commits to each song and puts part of himself in each interpretation. Justin Guarini is definitely an "original." I'm looking forward to following him throughout his career.

    JUST IN TIME...JUST INCREDIBLE...JUSTIN GUARINI

His self-titled CD contains some of the most soulful, soothing and sensual songs I have ever heard. Justin knows how to work a song to his own advantage and the result is something that won't soon be forgotten. In fact you want to replay it over and over. Watch this young man shoot straight to the stars and beyond!!!

    Justin Guarini delivers

Color me impressed. This guy has delivered the goods. I've heard 9 full tracks at Pick the Hits and parts of the remaining 4 at another site. Although the album offers diversity, when the songs are heard in succession, it makes for a cohesive listening experience. Guarini's distinctive voice is soulful, sometimes seductive, and layered with a pleasing vocal finesse. Another one of the pleasures of listening to Guarini is his innate ability to meaningfully deliver each song's lyrics. It's an intangible quality that separates good singers from the exceptional. Stand outs are the sensuous "I Saw Your Face", the intriguingly different "Sorry", the Latin flavored "One Heart Too Many", and the emotional "How Will I Know". Bottom line: The guy is impressive and the CD is excellent.

    Nice flavor....... Hot tracks.

This album is a great surprise from the curly haired hottie from the first American Idol. Let's just say I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! It has a little of everything.... R&B,pop ballads, Hip Hop, and even some latin flavor. Let's just say it has a very smooth sexy sound... and don't be surprised if you see most of these songs become hits.

A Must Add To Your CD Collection

I have only heard about eight of the songs all the way through and love them all. Everytime I think I have decided on a favorite song I hear a new song from the CD and I change my mind. Those who watched Justin on American Idol will be pleasantly surpised by this CD. The music on this CD is amazing, it has something for everyone. Justin Guarini should be really proud of all his hard work on this CD.

    Just Incredible!

I've been able to hear a lot of tracks because of pickthehits.com and I am BLOWN AWAY!!! If you thought he was good (or even OK) during American Idol... you will be incredibly surprised! "Sorry" is an amazing song, "I Saw Your Face" is beautiful and sexy, even "Get Here" has gotten a bit of a face lift and surpasses any other rendition, Justin's or anyone elses.

    WONDERFUL!

This is a fantastic cd. The music, the lyrics and Justin's voice all make it work. I was anxiously awaiting to see what his first CD would sound like and I am very IMPRESSED. This guy has some talent and the diversity of his taste of music is present as well. A musician who can tackle something that everyone will love has to be appreciated. I'm THANKFUL that June 10th is just around the corner.
