Este libro explora las intenciones de Hannah Arendt al hacer una lectura de la tercera "Crítica" kantiana y nombrar a la capacidad de juzgar como la más política de las facultades humanas, una vez que el totalitarismo del siglo XX significó la ruptura con la tradición filosófica moderna. Lo que aquí se plantea es una revisión de las condiciones para el logro de un intercambio discursivo que supone la renuncia a la violencia y la coerción, y también para la actualización de un espacio público democrático como ámbito de crítica permanente para las ideologías autoritarias. Por supuesto, la argumentación política estaría siempre amenazada por la parcialidad, la idiosincracia y todas esas formas de pensamiento privado que articulan las ideologías totalitarias. Pero otra forma de pensar la política -de juzgar el pasado y el presente, de argumentar políticamente en el espacio público- podría ser posible. Ésta es la apuesta de Arendt: señalar una ruta alternativa para la comprensión política, que nos permita hacernos cargo del pasado que nos vincula en la forma del horror, pero también actuar responsablemente en el presente cuya herencia recibimos sin testamento de por medio.
