I first read this book about 15 years ago and every year I reread this and the other 3 in the series again. The whole series is action packed with tight writing, witty humor, and government conspiracy theories. The series focuses on a man named Ray Larkin and his team of genetically altered dogs. Yes, the dogs talk, but that's where the cuteness ends. These dogs are trained as soldiers and at times the reader forgets that a dog is talking and not a human being. Ray is basically a mercernary for hire and each book deals with a crazy adventure of sorts. Each book can stand alone by itself so you don't have to read them in order although of course it is recommended to do so. In the first book, Ray forms his team and ships out to Chiron where the local natives, centaurs seem to be destroying government property (gigantic worms). Ray has to deal with his failing marriage as well. The action is a bit slow to start in the first book, but the author is setting up a great story that once the action does start it doesn't stop until the very last page. The book lays a solid groundwork for the other 3 to follow. Ray learns how to work and trust his dogs in the first one, so in the next books the reader is already very familiar with the team. The first book isn't my favorite, but it does set the tone for the rest. This book is worth the time it will take to track it down. I wish the author would continue the series. I always come away from reading this book and the others wanting more adventures of Ray and his dogs.
