Overview

Part mystery, part hospital soap opera, and part social commentary, Mary Roberts Rinehart's 1914 novel, K., is a look at a vanished world, a social artifact from the early 20th century, complete with rowdy, old-school roadhouses, forlorn lovers, and themes of revenge, altruism, and pride, not to mention a mysterious stranger known only as K.

Recent dramatic series, like The Knick, Mr. Selfridge, and Downton Abbey, have sought to give us a clear-eyed look at things as they were a century ago, but K. is the real McCoy, a time capsule taking us directly into that period and showing us life as it was before the Great War, before penicillin, before the vast changes in social norms that we now take for granted.

One of the first romantic mysteries, it is also a window in on medicine as it was practiced a hundred years ago, and, as such, provides the perfect backdrop to delve into the mysteries of the human heart as well as the mysteries of our own past.

This publication of K. by ARose Books is not a scanned document, but one that has been carefully edited. It includes the original illustrations plus new, custom ones from the publisher. The text has been specially formatted to present a very nice book to public. It also includes a short biography of the author, Mary Roberts Rinehart.

Masterfully-spun tale about the world of human experience -- romance, mystery, service, selfishness, shame, redemption, and the rest -- to be found in one small neighborhood. Rinehart is an expert at slow-burning suspense, and even though you feel sure things must all come out right in the end, enough goes badly wrong to make you doubt it, after all. Some scanned errors, but plenty readable. On another note, what is with the creeps and weirdos who use the review system for personal messages and game-playing? Do you think there's a chance B&N might someday delete that stuff, so that those of us who are actually interested in reading books don't have to wade through all of the idiocy to find an authentic review? So, so annoying...

I believe this book was scanned as there are many many characters and numbers thrown about. This doesn't hinder the readability of the book. I liked the book a lot. I enjoyed it as a period piece that I could reflect upon the beginning of the 1900's with the beginnings of autos, mention of "the canal," road houses, ... it was nice to learn more of the times. I enjoyed the characters greatly and felt like one of the neighborhood. I did not realize that this was suppossed to be a mystery. I though most things were fairly evident. I though this was a very nice novel. As I said, I really enjoyed the book, the time period, the characters, the descriptive view of life at the time, and many of the thoughtful analysis of various subjects matters. I hope others enjoy it as much as I.
