Overview

In Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts, world-renowned quilter Kaffe Fassett demonstrates how basic geometric forms—squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, circles, and quarter-circles—found in natural and manmade environments inspire his quilt designs. Twenty-three of his magnificent, inventive quilts—ranging from the relatively simple Tilt, ideal for beginners, to the more complex Circle of Stars, for more advanced stitchers—are showcased in the book, along with step-by-step instructions for making each one.

Along the way, Fassett also offers over a hundred photos of geometric inspiration from around the world—everything from triangular watermelon slices, to rectangular sheets of metal on African scrap dwellings, to lollipop-shaped topiary trees in Japan. In the accompanying text, Fassett reveals how he experiences the colors and basic shapes around him, how we can train our own eyes to see this rewarding source of creativity, and how we can, just as he does, combine striking fabrics with simple shapes to create our own spectacular quilt designs.

    Another Kaffe Wonder

If you love Kaffe Fassett, you are going to love this book. In many ways I think it to be one of his best so far. The photography is typical of Kaffe---GORGEOUS. The color inspiration is as always, amazing. Even if you don't like to quilt, this book would be great to ponder over and over. The patterns are many, and as the title implies, all very simple patterns to complete. One down side to this book is if you like to replicate quilts by Kaffe, this may not be a fun time for you. Many of the fabrics used in the quilts displayed are using his vintage fabrics, and therefore either hard to find or almost impossible. It appears this book may have been in the works for a while. Another issue I have with Kaffe patterns is his pattern writer's use of templates when rotary cutting instructions would be much simpler. Many of these designs just beg for a simpler method of cutting. Even sew <lol> I think this book rates 5 stars.

Highly Recommended - a must for Kaffe Fassett fans.

This book is wonderful. In it Kaffe Fassett sets out to explain how different shapes in nature and the world around us inform and inspire him as an artist. The book has many quilt patterns which he has designed for each of the different shapes. The photographs, as well as what is has to say, are truly inspiring for anyone who is into creating.
