Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Adult/High School-These novels are set in the universe of the popular Warhammer games, and contain materials that originally appeared in game journals. The setting of Kal Jerico is a crumbling, futuristic underworld of cyborg henchmen, pustular mutants, and big guns. The title figure, like most characters in either book, is stock: a tough, swashbuckling bounty hunter who never misses a shot and always emerges unscathed. The pen-and-ink illustrations suit the story, and improve with each chapter. However, with its clipped story lines, violent imagery, and a lexicon that practically requires a Warhammer interpreter, the book's appeal is limited. The same can be said of Obvious Tactics, another tale of heavily armed, invincible heroes. Two space marines and a mysterious assassin- one of the few female characters and certainly the most clothed-are on a mission to save the inhabitants of the planet Obzidion. The tale climaxes with a cataclysmic earthquake, a crashing spaceship, and the manifestation of one very large demon. While it benefits from consistency in both artwork and plot, this title, like the previous one, has a narrow audience of Warhammer gamers and those who prefer splattering gore and over-the-top action to lucid storytelling.-Douglas P.
