Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
The information on the cover of this large, square book identifies it as a "kaleidopops" book, which suggests there will be pop-up features and changing colors. In fact, colors do change when the reader gently moves the book up and down or forward and backward. Such movement causes the lenticular plastic surfaces on certain sea creatures to change colors. Some of the color changes are subtle, with shifts from light to dark; other changes are more obvious, altering the color patterns completely. One of the most interesting pages—without any pop-ups or plastic lenses—deals with creatures in the darkest depths of the ocean that are able to emit light, either to frighten or to attract other species. This is a much more interesting book than the cover would indicate. It is about the astonishing creatures living in the sea, rather than about the ocean itself. Readers will learn about giant squids, octopuses, sea dragons, ribbontail rays, colorful sea slugs, and the flamboyant cuttlefish. Open this book to see the kaleidopops, but stay to learn about a whole new world of underwater creatures. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
