Kali Kara - Shima City
Kali Kara – Shima City is Book 1 of a 6-book series. It's a fast-paced, science fiction adventure that begins in the year 2056.

Kali Kara, age fourteen, moves from her home in Sonoita, Arizona, to a city underground called Shima City. She's no ordinary teen. She has special powers that nobody knows about except her grandmother.

She thinks she is one of a kind, until she meets Jason Brooks, a fellow student at the school in Shima City. Jason has powers similar to hers but warns her to keep them hidden. He's afraid she'll be kidnapped like his twin brother, Jonathan.

Jonathan has been captured by a group of devious scientist anxious to study his ability to read minds. The book follows Kali, Jason, Vivienne, Yerik, Pilar, and Addae as they plan and execute Jonathan's rescue. Jonathan's rescue keeps readers on the edge of their seats and sets the stage for the next adventure.

The characters are unique and appealing. The plot is rich and fast-paced. A sample of Chapter 1 appears below. Enjoy!

CHAPTER ONE

"I guess I look as horrible as I feel." Kali said to herself when she woke up and saw the empty train seat next to her. She hadn't combed her hair that morning and the stained t-shirt she was wearing had been taken from a pile of dirty clothes on the floor. She lifted her shirt collar over her nose and took a whiff. "Ugh! No wonder I'm sitting by myself. Oh well, more room for me." She stretched her legs, leaned back, and looked out the window. The train was traveling at high speed so she focused on the Rincon mountains in the distance.

"More room for me," she repeated. "I wish." She wouldn't have much room where she was headed. Kali and her parents were leaving their home in Sonoita, Arizona and moving to Shima City, a city seventy miles north and two thousand feet down. Space was hard to come by in underground cities and Shima City was one of smallest underground cities in North America.

As she stared out the window, she wondered how she was going to adjust to living in a small apartment with her parents. She was used to living in a twenty-acre greenhouse. Her parents, Alisha and Naren Kara, were professors at the Sonoran Agricultural University and they lived in an adobe ranch located inside the greenhouse. The ranch had belonged to an Arizona vintner and included a wine cellar, tasting room, and guesthouse.

Kali was an only child and had moved into the guesthouse when she was twelve. Now, at fourteen, she was expected to give up all that space for a small apartment, in a small city, deep inside the Earth. Naturally, she had been upset and hadn't spoken to her parents much since receiving the news.

She continued to look out the window, knowing she wouldn't see anything like this for years. No mountains, no desert, not even sky. She could see Last Chance Road running parallel to the tracks and the town of Cascabel in the distance. That meant she had been asleep for about an hour. They'd be arriving at the San Pedro Train Station soon. Too soon. She quickly soaked up the last bit of freedom visible from her seat.

There was a single car driving on the road, a black sedan with dark windows, and a gasoline engine. It was strange to see any cars, gasoline, or electric, on the road during the day. Summer was in full swing on June 6, 2056, and the temperature outside was 130°. Most people avoided driving during the day unless it was an emergency. Seeing the car disturbed Kali. It felt like a bad omen. She watched it until the train tracks curved away and headed north.

As the train rounded the curve, Kali's stomach lurched. She wrapped her arms around her waist and bent her head over her knees. Were the shots making her sick? She breathed slowly and tried to relax. Maybe it was just nerves. She was still trying to calm her stomach when a bell rang inside the train and everything went dark. The interior lights flickered on and the train began to slow down. They had entered the mouth of the Soza Mesa tunnel.

A pleasant, female voice sounded over the intercom. "We are approaching the San Pedro Train Station and will arrive in approximately four minutes. Please remain in your seats until the train has come to a complete stop. Thank you for choosing Hathaway Rail Express."

By the time the train reached the station, Kali was feeling nauseous and dizzy. The shots were definitely taking their toll. She waited for her parents to exit the car before grabbing her backpack and heading out. She tried to keep up with the crowd but paid the price when she walked off the train. She missed the first step and lunged forward. Her backpack slipped off her shoulder and it slid across the floor. She held out her hands preparing to fall but miraculously found her footing and jumped to the ground, landing on both feet.
