Overview

Michael Kamen's The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms, dubbed the composer's "first classical symphony," is a four-part symphonic poem inspired by the Native American Anasazi people. Kamen, who was commissioned to write New Moon by Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra for Washington, D.C.'s millennial celebration, is a versatile, award-winning composer who is as at home writing film and ballet music as he is penning hit pop singles. In New Moon, Kamen draws on his symphonic experience, composing a lavishly orchestrated, satisfying score that evokes the mysterious, remote world of the lost Anasazi culture. Mr. Holland's Opus - An American Symphony, the companion piece on the CD, is less a symphony than a compilation of selections from the soundtrack to Mr. Holland's Opus. Richard Dreyfuss fans may enjoy recalling the movie, but as a stand-alone score, the kitsch level is very high, especially in the overbearing "Finale." New Moon, however, will appeal more broadly, as it deserves. Slatkin and the National Symphony are in fine form, and the orchestral sound is warm and lush.
