Kandinsky accompanies the first full-scale retrospective of the artist's career to be exhibited in the United States since 1985, when the Guggenheim culminated its trio of groundbreaking exhibitions of the artist's life and work in Munich, Russia and Paris. This presentation of nearly 100 paintings brings together works from the three institutions that have the greatest concentration of Kandinsky's work in the world: the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich; as well as significant loans from private and public holdings. This traveling exhibition's final iteration at the Guggenheim Museum will investigate both Kandinsky's formal and conceptual contributions to the course of abstraction in the twentieth century, concentrating on his innovations in painting. Kandinsky traces the artist's vision through thematic motifs such as the horse and rider, mountainous landscapes, tumultuous seascapes, apocalyptic imagery and other religious subjects.

This invaluable scholarly monograph on abstract Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) reproduces scores of recently rediscovered paintings that had languishd for decades in Soviet museums and in private collections. German art historian Hahl-Koch provides a wealth of new details on Kandinsky's life and art, discussing, for example, his little-known experimental stage plays which strove for a synthesis of all the arts, and his friendships with Paul Klee, Arnold Schonberg and composer Thomas von Hartmann, who introduced the artist to Sufism, the mystical offshoot of Islam. Most chapters include generous excerpts from Kandinsky's newspaper articles, essays and unpublished letters, creating the impression of a tolerant nonconformist who saw art as inseparably linked with the higher laws of the cosmos. The wonderful reproductions furnish an exciting glimpse of Kandinsky's leap into abstraction after his early absorption of folk and religious art, fauvism and neo-impressionism. (Jan.)

    Few, dull prints

    This book has only a handful of full-color prints of Kandinsky's work from each time period covered. The prints that are reproduced, are printed using rather dully-colored ink. You've never before seen his work look so un-alive! Sure, there are some prints, and there's plenty of history. However, if you're going to buy a Kandinsky ART book, splurge on the best-quality one; this one is just uninspiring. It's like seeing Monet in black-and-white.
