Children's LiteratureNetzley does a good job describing the early history of Kansas in this book from the "Seeds of a Nation" series. Chapter one contains detailed descriptions of the various Native American tribes who inhabited Kansas. Chapter two explains the affect the Spanish and French explorers had on the land and people, as well as explorations of Lewis and Clark. Chapter three describes the arguments and battles over land between the Native Americans and the settlers. Chapter four details how Kansas became a state and the battles between pro and anti slavery activists. A "Facts about Kansas" and a glossary completes the book. The early history of Kansas is well-explained, but very few facts after the Civil War are included. Maps and various color and black and white illustrations and reproduced painting add visual interest to the book. 2003, Kidhaven, Ages 8 up.
