Overview

On his record My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, hip-hop superstar Kanye West "unleashes an array of flavors-old school hip-hop, progressive rock, R&B, classical music-and mixes and matches them," says USA TODAY, the Nation's No. 1 Newspaper. The paper describes Kanye's songs as "sonic jewels."

Since releasing his first album, The College Dropout, in 2004, Kanye has taken the hip-hop world by storm. He raps, he sings, and he dances, dazzling audiences with his unique musical style. People cheer when he takes the stage, but his socially conscious lyrics also make listeners think about what the words mean.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams
Unlike most other hip-hop artists, Kayne West comes from a solid, middle class family and was raised to be confident in who he was and what his goals were. West has taken the hip-hop genre by storm, becoming one of the biggest hip-hop stars in the industry and sought after as a rapper, producer, beat maker, and label executive. While West is greatly respected as an artist, his controversial actions have made him a well-known, and not entirely respected, figure outside the hop-hop genre and music industry as a whole. Despite the controversies surrounding him, West is a deeply spiritual person as well as devoted to friends and family. He has sought to take hip-hop beyond the gangsta reputation it began as and has used his stardom to fight discrimination and to encourage children to stay in school. Morgan has written a straightforward biography of Kanye West that does not mince words or edit out the scandalous actions that have made West such a well-known figure. Filled with images from throughout West's life, the text includes briefs from the USA Today newspaper that adds depth to the book and insight into West's life. A timeline, bibliography, discography, and additional sources to consult are included at the end of the text, which is part of the "Lifeline Biographies" series. Reviewer: Danielle Williams

This biography taught me that Kanye West was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was brought up by his single mother after his father left them. They lived in a small apartment in Georgia until she took a job in Chicago. Kanye did not excel in school like his mother who had a doctorate and was a teacher for a living. The only class Kanye did well in was art. From an early age he knew he wanted to do music. At a young age, Kanye turned his room into a studio where he began making beats with his friends in every minute of his free time. As his passion for music grew, his grades got worse. Kanye earned a partial scholarship to the American Academy of Art in downtown Chicago due to his artistic talent. After taking only a few classes, he decided he didn’t want an art career. Kanye’s mom was not happy with his decision. After many years of putting all his time and energy into music it finally began to pay off. Kanye got his big break when he signed with Roc-A-Fella records in the early 2000’s. He began making beats for Jay-Z and shortly was a household name after Jay-Z album “Blueprints” dropped. Although he was doing good for himself Kanye wanted more. He wanted to be in front of the mic and not just producing the beats. In 2002 Kanye was in a horrible car accident that almost took his life.
