This CD-ROM is the electronic version of the popular standard psychiatric text. It is coupled with the shortened version of the two-volume, comprehensive text to create an excellent reference and board review resource. By presenting the text in electronic format, the authors aim to make information more readily available to the computer-based physician. Information on specific psychiatric disorders can be easily grouped and reviewed. In the presence of large, comprehensive textbooks, this interactive format ensures that information is more likely to reach the user. This product is intended primarily for psychiatric residents and practicing mental health professionals. However, in this format, it is more useful than a traditional text for primary care physicians from whom the majority of psychiatric patients will initially seek help. The text that this CD-ROM is based on has long been a standard for all those involved in mental healthcare delivery. In this synopsis, all major psychiatric phenomena are covered to some degree. Figures and tables are embedded in the text as hyper-links and make for better readability and manipulation. The CD-ROM is easily installed, although there is little documentation. While a product like this does not require many ""bells and whistles,"" the bookmark and highlighter functions are useful for future reference. The search engine could use a little work as it is pretty good at pulling up unrelated material and is not very specific. The self-examination would also be improved if the user could go over questions on a particular topic, rather than major categories such as ""Special Issues in Psychiatry."" This solid product is easy to use, provides awealth of searchable information, and serves as a reliable quick reference and board examination review.
