The best-selling general psychiatry text since 1972, Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis of Psychiatry is now in its thoroughly updated Ninth Edition. This complete, concise overview of the entire field of psychiatry is a staple board review text for psychiatry residents and is popular with a broad range of students in medicine, clinical psychology, social work, and occupational therapy.

This edition includes new chapters on health care delivery systems and end-of-life care and palliative medicine. Coverage of psychotropic drugs and neuropsychiatric foundations of biological psychiatry has been significantly updated. The book is DSM-IV-TR compatible and replete with case studies and tables, including ICD-10 diagnostic coding tables.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Philip Khoury, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This ninth edition of a one-volume review of psychiatry incorporates DSM IV-TR as well as ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. The last edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an up-to-date, compact, and practical book covering the entire field of psychiatry. This is essentially the material that should be and can be mastered by mental health professionals and therefore is a worthy standard. The authors meet this very difficult objective.
Audience: The authors state that this book is aimed at a diverse group, including all professionals who work with the mentally ill and family members/friends caring for them. I found certain patients benefited from reading sections to understand the current conceptualization of their diseases.
Features: There is little that is not covered. What is best is how it stands apart from the comprehensive texts. The readers of the synopsis are not hampered by the original purpose of serving as a compendium. What you have is a book that sets the standard for what we should master as psychiatrists. The illustrations have been updated and keep one interested, and new sections on neuroendocrinology/immunology, reproductive medicine, and palliative care are worthy additions. The new sections address key shortcomings of the 8th edition. A minor complaint is not about the content at all, but that the binding is flimsy, and already my copy has some damage.
Assessment: The previous edition is the book with which I am very familiar with. I have read it edition throughout my psychiatric residency. This new edition is better. The updated sections are necessary revisions and the book remains well written and thorough. The Synopsis of Psychiatry will remain the cornerstone of my education. It is the book to use in studying for written and oral boards and to bring into private practice. Bravo!
