Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Nancy Schell, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This eighth edition provides a detailed overview of psychiatric disorders, their epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment, along with discussions of current findings and theories regarding possible etiologies or mechanisms. Also covered are the biological, sociological, and psychological aspects of psychiatry as well as sociopolitical issues affecting medical practice. These issues include: the role of managed care; decrease in residency training programs; physician-assisted suicide; and euthanasia.
Purpose: This textbook is part of a system developed to facilitate teaching of psychiatric and behavioral sciences. The primary reference in this system is The Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, which is global in scope and depth. This synopsis is a condensed version, which aims to provide the latest information in a multidisciplinary framework while maintaining a humanitarian outlook.
Audience: The book is meant to address the needs of medical students, psychiatry residents, practicing psychiatrists, neurologists, primary care physicians, other non-psychiatric physicians, and mental health professionals of all fields.
Features: It is a well illustrated and fully updated edition with the addition of newly approved psychiatric drugs, new chapters and sections, and more pictures of Freud (some never before published) and other important figures. An excellent new feature is the addition of colored text and format which separates DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and ICD-10 criteria from each other and from the body of the text. Tables and new cases (from ICD-10 casebooks) are similarly isolated, greatly enhancing the visual impact and promoting much more focused reading.
Assessment: This is an extremely useful, comprehensive book incorporating the latest information which is now in a much more readable form thanks to new formatting and the addition of color features. This book is highly recommended.
