Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"The usefulness of this handbook cannot be overstated! The revisions and new chapters are welcome additions and certainly justify this update." - Valerie E Mathis-Allen, MD, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services on behalf of DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW SERVICE

Reviewer: Valerie E Mathis-Allen, MD (Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services)
Description: This concise pocket-sized book reviews the full spectrum of drugs currently prescribed in clinical psychiatry, covering new FDA-approved drugs and recent trends in psychiatric drug treatment. Unique structural elements include the classification of drugs according to their pharmacological activity, the color guide to some of the commonly prescribed drugs, and the index of the generic names of the drugs. This edition updates and revises each section and adds new sections reflecting the recent interest in nutritional supplements and weight loss drugs. The previous edition was published 2011.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide updated information about drug selection and use.
Audience: The intended audience includes psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, and medical students who require up-to-date information about the use of drugs for the treatment of psychiatric disorders in adults and children. Other physicians, particularly primary care specialists who are increasingly prescribing psychotropic medications, also will find this book valuable. Other mental health professionals, including nurses, psychologists, and social workers, can use this as a reference about the psychiatric drugs prescribed for their patients or clients. Really, this handbook is valuable for anyone interested in learning about these drugs. For instance, psychopharmacology students may find it useful.
Features: In addition to the drugs that are used to treat psychiatric disorders, the handbook covers drugs that are used to treat general medical or neurological conditions seen in patients with mental illness. Its best attributes are the ease of use, the brevity of the chapters, and the chapter organization with pharmacological actions, therapeutic indications, precautions and adverse reactions, drug interactions, laboratory interferences, dosage, and clinical guidelines. The shortcomings of the book are the lack of color and the print quality of the illustrations. More illustrations would be helpful. The addition of an alphabetical brand name index would be appreciated. The index could be more exhaustive, including such items as a baseline lab index rather than having to search for each individual drug.
Assessment: The usefulness of this handbook cannot be overstated! The revisions and new chapters are welcome additions and certainly justify this update.
