Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:William Miles, MD(Rush University Medical Center)
Description:This softcover book offers a review of psychiatry and functions as a study guide that may be used alone or in conjunction with Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis of Psychiatry 10th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2007). The previous study guide was published in 2003.
Purpose:This is intended as a comprehensive review of psychiatric medicine.
Audience:According to the authors, the book is written for medical students, psychiatric physicians, and mental health professionals in other fields. However, it is probably too advanced for medical students.
Features:Each of the 61 chapters is structured the same way, beginning with a short summary followed by a list of key terms the student should master. The rest of each chapter is composed of board-style review questions. Following the questions is a section of answers, with both correct and incorrect answers discussed in detail. The explanations of why certain answers are incorrect are particularly helpful. There are some tables and black and white photographs scattered throughout. The appendix is a review of the various styles of questions one might encounter on board exams, complete with helpful hints on how to approach them. A thorough index ends the book.
Assessment:Whether used alone or in conjunction with the main text, this is an excellent review of psychiatric medicine. It is exhaustingly thorough yet concise. Certainly anyone studying for the written portion of psychiatry boards would benefit from this study guide. Kaplan and Sadock remains the pinnacle of references for our field, and this new edition of the study guide is excellent.
