Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Part of the publisher's "Blazers" series (other martial arts titles include Jujitsu, Kendo, Muay Thai, and Tae Kwon Do), this book begins with an introduction to the historical origins of karate on the island of Okinawa during the 1600s, the time of the Ryukyuan Kingdom. Karate means "empty hand," the text informs us, and karate fighters are called "Karateka." Fighters still use some of the weapons that were employed in ancient Okinawa. Such facts of interest are interspersed throughout the book's four brief chapters. These cover the practice of karate, steps to mastery including ranks and belts, and competitions and championships. A double spread is devoted to a labeled photograph depicting a pair of students facing off and showing their gear, the area they will spar in, and the referee. Another is an action photo of a karate kick. Essential content terms are in bold font. A glossary includes the Okinawan-derived terms for uniform, staff, and teacher as well as English terms like "defend" and "weight class." In addition many terms are also defined on the page in which they appear. A brief list of additional readings, a link to the FactHound Internet site, and an index round out the book. An easy-to-read introduction in a thirty-two-page format, this book should tap the interest of young readers, some of whom may themselves be beginning practitioners. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
