Overview

Karen Kilimnik's delirious large-format book "Drawings" showed us models, designer clothes, thoroughbred horses and dogs—depicting the desire for fame and the hunger for sex and drugs that animates so much of our contemporary popular culture. Now, in her new book "Paintings", Kilimnik explores a glamorous and subversive new approach to her signature motifs. This, her second book published by Edition Patrick Frey, presents 70 delicate miniature paintings from the last five years. A romantic and melodramatic yearning colors her views of English manor houses and cursed fairy-tale castles. Empathetically, she portrays three angora cats as if they were the three Graces. Her exotic ducks remind us of Gericault's hens, while her painting of a falcon looks like a commission by the emir of Quatar. Passionately, she paints butterflies, swirling through the night. Time and again, she returns to the old legend of the price purportedly exacted by fame and beauty. In a brilliant triptych, Princess Diana leaves the Ritz for the last time. Leonardo di Caprio smiles boyishly, whereas Kate Moss is feeling up the crotch of her blue jeans. A moon, veiled by clouds is shining behind the decoratively barren trees. Candles burn in the park at night: was it a cheerful birthday party or a rather dark ritual?

Author Biography: Karen Kilimnik was born in Philadelphia circa 1962. Her works are on display in major European and American museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; ICA, London; Kunsthalle, Wien; Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt; and Kunsthalle, Zurich. Solo shows of Karen Kilimnik's oil paintings are scheduled in 2000 at Kunstverein Wolfsburg, South London Gallery, and Kunstverein Bonn. She works and resides in Philadelphia.
