Nach dem kurzen Intermezzo unter Justinian I., unter dem Byzanz wieder kurzzeitig die beherrschende Macht im Mittelmeerraum geworden war , wurde Byzanz zur Zeit Karls wieder in die Defensive gedrängt. Zu dem Verlust vieler Provinzen kamen innerpolitische Unruhen hinzu. Byzanz musste seine Aufmerksamkeit dem Osten bzw. dem byzantinischen Kernland widmen. Die verblieben italienischen Besitzungen verloren immer weiter an Bedeutung.
Zur gleichen Zeit stiegen im Westen die Franken auf, deren Reich unter den Karolingern zur führenden Macht Westeuropas wurde. Unter Karl dem Großen erlangte es mit Ausnahme der britischen Inseln und der iberischen Halbinsel in etwa die Ausmaße des weströmischen Reiches. Aber inwiefern trat es mit Karls Kaiserkrönung im Jahr 800 n.Chr. in seine Fußstapfen? Wie waren die Beziehungen zwischen den Franken und den Byzantinern und wie konnte ein "Barbar" Imperator werden? Hierzu werden die Beziehungen und Verhandlungen zwischen den Franken und Byzanz seit 765 n.Chr. bis zu Karls Tod untersucht. Die byzantinische Innenpolitik und die Angriffe der Araber im Osten und der Bulgaren im Norden werden dazu untersucht. Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der politischen Situation, die zu Karls Kaiserkrönung führte.
