Overview

When Walter Mosley published the first Leonid McGill novel, The Long Fall—the acclaimed New York Times bestseller that is now being developed as a series for HBO—it was clear that this new hero was a man with a past. He was a private investigator who had “decided to go from crooked to slightly bent,” turning down the shady but lucrative work that New York’s thugs and mobsters had long brought to his door.In “Karma,” Walter Mosley tells us the story of the moment McGill decided to change his ways, when a seemingly classic femme fatale forced him to confront the reality of his life of corruption and betrayal. It was the culmination of a dark and tragic case that reached back through McGill’s entire career, plumbing the full, complex history of the soul-scarred figure now hailed as “a poignantly real character . . . [and] a more than worthy successor to Philip Marlowe.” (The Boston Globe)Originally published in Otto Penzler’s anthology Dangerous Women, “Karma” was included in Best American Mystery Stories 2006, edited by Scott Turow.

Be warned - Karma is a short story, NOT a novel. Upon completion of this eBook, I expected to understand the backstory of the Leonid McGill character. Contrary to how the book is marketed, Karma dances around the edges of Leonid's history, but does not explain much. This perhaps could be Mr. Mosely's intent...to slowly reveal the character through the series. As a die-hard fan, I have come to understand that Mosley is slow to reveal the history/motivations of his characters at times. However, I still would have liked to have been given a little more in this short story. In a nutshell, Karma does not deliver on the promise, but I encourage true beleivers to continue on to the other books within the Leonid McGill series. Mosley is still one of our most gifted story tellers in the modern crime series genre.

Walter Mosley is a great writer. Although this short story/novella is imaginative, I felt he did not accomplish the character development in his usual good fashion.

Size does not matter when it comes to this book. Walter does a great job telling his story as usual! I enjoyed reading it.

It's the prequel to When the Thrill is gone. Glad I had my nook so that I could take advantage of the story! Can't wait until the book itself comes out. Loving Walter Mosley!!!
