Overview

Excerpt from The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî

That The Kasîdah of Sir Richard Francis Burton will eventually rank next after Fitz-Gerald's Rubáiyát is not necessarily an uncritical affirmation.

Composed seven years before "that large infidel" swam into sight in 1859, it was not printed until 1880. In 1893 Lady Burton included it in the biography of her husband, where text and notes were practically buried; again in 1894 a limited edition of 100 copies only was issued.

"Only an admirer of Omar Khayyám could have written The Kasîdah (couplets) of that Hájî Abdû al-Yazdi, who must rank in the shadow-land of mythical Orientals with Mirza Schaffy," says Mr. Justin Huntly McCarthy.

As a poem it is peculiarly Sir Richard Burton's own, and borrows nothing from its splendid rival. It bears his seal and superscription in every line. The greatest Oriental scholar England ever had and neglected, he has given us of his heart of hearts in this virile production.

The present edition is limited to 250 copies, and is uniform with the subscriber's sets of the now world-famous Nights.
