Overview

After a terrible car accident, Kat wakes up with no idea who she is, and no memory of anything before the crash. She doesn't even recognize her mum, much less her friends from school—Poppy, Jade, and the mysterious Tina. Only after she finds her old diary—written in a voice no longer her own—does Kat begin to discover the terrible secrets of her previous life.

Lee Weatherly grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and currently lives in Hampshire, England, surrounded by teetering mountains of books and CDs. She is the author of two other novels, Child X, and Breakfast at Sadie's, both from David Fickling Books.

Thirteen-year-old Katherine Tyler knows she's been hit by a car after running out in front of it, but her explanation for the accident-as well as memories of family, friends and preferences-has been wiped away due to amnesia. This quick, predictable story with accessible British lingo alternates between present-day "Kat," who now gravitates to bright colors, classical music and her mother's amusing, sympathetic live-in boyfriend, Richard, and the journal of her formal self, "Kathy," who only wore monochromatic colors, hated Richard's moving-in and his silly card tricks, and became exceedingly jealous over the new girl in school. Many of Kat's questions, such as her friends' unyielding anger toward her, the true nature of her deceased father, a mysterious cat statue and the reason she abandoned the violin, are finally answered when she discovers Kathy's journal and reconciles both halves of herself. Although Weatherly admittedly takes allowances with science, she offers readers who enjoy stories about switched lives the opportunity to imagine the possibilities of starting over with a clean slate.
