Overview

For the first time in paperback—all three of Jean Plaidy’s Katharine of Aragon novels in one volume.

Legendary historical novelist Jean Plaidy begins her tales of Henry VIII’s queens with the story of his first wife, the Spanish princess Katharine of Aragon.

As a teenager, Katharine leaves her beloved Spain, land of olive groves and soaring cathedrals, for the drab, rainy island of England. There she is married to the king’s eldest son, Arthur, a sickly boy who dies six months after the wedding. Katharine is left a widow who was never truly a wife, lonely in a strange land, with a very bleak future. Her only hope of escape is to marry the king’s second son, Prince Henry, now heir to the throne. Tall, athletic, handsome, a lover of poetry and music, Henry is all that Katharine could want in a husband. But their first son dies and, after many more pregnancies, only one child survives, a daughter. Disappointed by his lack of an heir, Henry’s eye wanders, and he becomes enamored of another woman—a country nobleman’s daughter named Anne Boleyn. When Henry begins searching for ways to put aside his loyal first wife, Katharine must fight to remain Queen of England and to keep the husband she once loved so dearly.

    The life of Queen Katherine

A delightful and insightful journey that kept me turning page after page. I felt a part of the story because of how real Jean Plaidy portrayed the characters. Katherine was a remarkable woman and a remarkable queen. It is so sad that she had to be married to a tyrannical husband who cast her aside like an old shoe when he no longer wanted her. Fans of Jean Plaidy will not be disappointed with this wonderful book.

Definitely another win in the Jean Plaidy library

Jean Plaidy is one of the best historical fiction writers in my opinion. She always seems to put you right there, back in time, to experience it. I feel dreadfully sorry for Katherine of Aragon while at the same time I am in awe of her. She was treated so terribly by the man who was supposed to love & protect her, it's heartbreaking. Even under the most harrowing of circumstances, this woman never backs down! It's truly amazing to me. I don't know if I would have such fortitude were I in her shoes. Katherine of Aragon was a powerful woman & the book is a wonderful telling of her story.

    Most Highly Recommended

Another magnificent nail-biting page turner that is very hard to put down. Ms. Plaidy certainly has a way of putting her reader right into the heart of all the action. And, again, you will laugh with the characters, and cry with the characters and go through all things with them. Everyone is so real and alive through the masterful writing that you can't help but feel as though you truly know these characters. Once again, thank you and BRAVA!

    great book

It is a mixture of facts and novalization. I enjoy the Tudor era and recommend this book, which is 3 books in one. Since its long, it may seem to drag on at times, but taking breaks will take care of it!

    Enjoyable

The first part of this book is a little slow if you read To Hold the Crown. The beginning is a recap through the eyes of Katherine. It is nice to see the character build strength as the story progresses. Sorry, I just don't think that she is an interesting figure in history to warrant this many pages. The supporting characters are where the story is really at.

    good but.......

I have read a lot of Jean Plaidy's books and i have to say this one starts off boring but it dose actually get pretty good. I have never really cared for Katharine that much i always thought that if she would have just gone into a nunnery like they had sugested then Anne would have had a better chance of having a boy and she would have lived (little biased b/c Anne Boylen is my fave) but now after eading this book i understand y she would not do that. She was the daughter of Isabella and Ferdiand the Catholic Kings she was rasied never to give up and she didn;t she fought to the end for her daughter and her rights.
So why the beging of this book is very slow and boring it gets better trust me and u will understand Katharine better

Another look at Katherine of Aragon

I've read several Plaidy books, and none of them really 'sparked' my interst. It wasn't that exciting, but this one was actually really good. This may start off slow, and if feels like it's dragging forever (espeically at the beginning, but please, stick with it), but it will get better. By the second book, you would be fallen into the Tudor court, with a full scope of characters. I believe that this one is a good Plaidy, as oppose to some other ones (like The Rose without a Thorn). This book at least made me intersted in Katherine of Aragon, which is actually pretty good, because I never cared for this Spanish queen. Still, there are some flaws, and trust me, the beginning is not easy to bear with. Another one is that they somehow stick Anne Boleyn and her early romance (Henry Percy), but then they never bothered mentioning her again. Which is strange, because she was the one that altered Katherine's life. Wolsey was given a backbone story, but Anne wasn't. I was waiting forever for her to come out, but she didn't even say anything. It was just an observation by Katherine, which is very biased. But if you can plow through it, you'll find something exciting.

    sick of plaidy

I have read so much by Jean Plaidy, by now I feel more like I have to read it. I don't much enjoy her stories. I admire her attempts to justify actions in history, but it's just boring. There is so much more interesting reads out there that Plaidy just seems like a waste of time. I didnt even finish this book.
