Overview

Art Historian and Los Angeles native Margot, her pastor husband Paul, and his mother, Ruth, are spending their first Christmas in Mitchell, the small town in California’s central valley they’ve been called to serve. Ruth suffers from Alzheimer’s and Margot cares for her. Eager to be accepted in the rural community, “city girl” Margot happily agreed to decorate their historic parsonage in a Nativity theme as part of the women’s club’s annual Christmas Home Tour. After all, Estelle Delsey, the stodgy old widow who has installed herself as Mitchell’s ultimate arbiter of taste and standing in the community, made it clear that the parlor display of the large pieces, hand-carved by the town’s very first pastor, was required. In her efforts to fit in, Margot even agrees to bake Mrs. Delsey’s famous butter cookies to serve during the tour.
But when Ruth confuses Christmas with the Fourth of July, Margot must choose: Does she fulfill her promise to Mrs. Delsey or humor her mother-in-law’s confusion? With some help from Paul and from her next-door-neighbor and best friend Sue, Margot is determined to honor Mitchell’s Christmas tradition and her mother-in-law. A series of surprises punctuate the day, leading to some soul-searching and a rare rebuke from her adoring husband. By the time a surprising twist ends the remarkable day, she is reminded that when she honors God, the other details seem to work themselves out.

Yankee Doodle Christmas by Sheila Seiler Lagrand was a delightful surprise. I loved the twist at the end. This tender Christmas story has a loving message for all, and warmed my heart as it addresses a dilemma so many of us face as our loved ones grow older.

This is such a lovely little story. At first it seems to be just a tale of the busyness and stress that come with making Christmas "just right", but a few unexpected twists and a turn bring out the true themes of redemption, respect, and love. What a fabulous way to weave a tapestry of personal histories coming together to help everyone involved!

    Honour and grace.
Is it Christmas or is it the Fourth of July? There seems to be a bit of a mix-up in Mitchell, California, at least at the home of Pastor Paul and his wife Margot. Paul's mother Ruth is living with the effects of Alzheimer's disease and the confusion that so often ensues. This wise and warming tale is an shining example of extending grace and honoring parents.
You'll smile and laugh and likely weep as you watch God's way of working things out to the benefit of all.

It's a recipe for disaster - or is it?

When community expectations and family needs clash, what gives?

There are very clear expectations of Margot, a pastor's wife who is new to the community. Margot is perfectly capable of meeting the expectations of the ladies in her congregation and sets out to do just that with beautiful decorations and tasty cookies. However, Margot is also caregiver to her mother-in-law who has Alzheimer's and somehow thinks it's time to put out decorations for the 4th of July.

Read this delightful Christmas story to find out how Margot discovers that sometimes our so-called disasters are God's opportunities.
