Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Duey (the Unicorn's Secret series) trots out the Hoofbeats series with this conventionally satisfying yet occasionally sluggish story. Set on an Iowa farm in the 184os, it introduces the nine-year-old narrator, Katie Rose, who has been living with the heartless, demanding Stevenses ever since her parents and sister died of fever three years earlier. Performing never-ending chores, Katie dreams of going to live with her uncle-who hasn't yet written back to her-and steals time in the barn, finding solace in the company of the animals. The lonely girl establishes a special rapport with a wild mustang that Mr. Stevens has been tricked into buying and that seems incapable of being tamed. Recognizing the stallion's potential-and sensing that it needs a friend as much as she does-Katie soothes the horse and clandestinely allows it the exercise it desperately needs. The girl's hopes rise when Mr. Stevens decides to sell the farm and move west to homestead, in Oregon-where Katie's uncle lives-she later overhears the farmer's plans to place her in an orphanage and destroy the mustang. Horse aficionados will be the most appreciative audience for the sometimes protracted barn scenes involving Katie and the mustang, as well as the hoky chapter openers seemingly narrated by the mustang itself. Yet the heroine's plight and pluck and the novel's dramatic conclusion may well entice other readers to ride on to Book Two, due out the same month. Ages 8-up. Excellent Series!

My daughter and I are reading this series together and I love it just as much as she does. It is so refreshing to hear my child beg to keep reading! I would recommend this to any child, not just a girl, between the ages of 8 and 12, especially if they love horses!

    DEPRESSING, SAD & BLEAK

This Hoofbeats series is SO SAD & DEPRESSING. Impossible to read without crying. Impossible to explain to your daughters about why girls in the 1820s were beaten & treated as unpaid labor. MISERABLE SERIES--not worth reading as an adult--TERRIBLE FOR KIDS! Emotionally draining & BLEAK...don't even check this out from the library--you'll regret it!

    BLEAK, DEPRESSING, MISERABLE BOOKS!

Books one & two of this series are SO DEPRESSING & SAD & BLEAK--I had a hard time reading them to my daughters every night. I found it impossible to explain why a young girl was an orphan, why she mourned her dead parents (which the author details graphically), and why she's being BEATEN & treated as a SLAVE by the childless couple who takes her in.

Things never get better or happier--they just change location. She goes on the trail to Oregon, and meets with MORE heart-wrenching tragedy. Things never gell with the wild Mustang. There is NO happy ending--things are just left as bleak as they started.

I wouldn't read this as an adult--DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS!!! Sad, sad, nightmare city!

    Bleak, Depressing, MISERABLE BOOK

My grade-school age daughter brought this home & we started reading it at bedtime. It's a TERRIBLE SERIES! We've now read books one & two--hoping book two would get better.

Set in the early 1800's, they're SUPER-SAD & BLEAK. The main character, Katie, is an orphan whose parents & sister died of "the fever." She lives with a childless couple who BEAT HER & treat her as their poorly-fed SLAVE.

She spends chapters talking about being beaten with a willow switch for crying out loud! In book two, Katie escapes, but then finds herself in the middle of tragedy again--on the trail to Oregon.

They were VERY hard to read. I cried, my daughters cried. I found I couldn't sufficiently explain to them why thing were as they were--why the era, and the times they lived in made it ok for women to be beaten & treated like dirt. I couldn't say anything to make it better.

The author's writing style was long-winded & depressing to boot. The stories did NOT have any kind of upbeat, happy ending--they were just left hanging...from one miserable moment to the next.

I wouldn't read these as an adult! DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS!!!

Wonderful new series for young readers.

Young Katie, orphaned in an epidemic, is taken in by Mr. and Mrs. Stevens, a childless couple. But then she learned that they planned to kill the mustang horse she had befriended and take her to an orphanage in St. Louis. With the help of Hiram, the farmhand, Katie is able to escape the Stevenses and take the mustang with her. Hiram, who has no family of his own, feels he must protect Katie and offers to take her on the long journey west so she can live with her relatives in Oregon. But just the journey to Independence, Missourri -- the starting-off point for the Oregon Trail -- is difficult and dangerous, and the mustang still doesn't trust Katie fully. Young readers who enjoy historical fiction or horse stories will love this new series from Kathleen Duey.
