IntroductionMy one favorite place in the whole entire world is my family cottage on lake Michigan, Camp Anomanong. No matter where I travel-from India to Africa, from Colorado to New York City-it still keeps coming up number one. And you know how when you grow up and your return to placed you knew as a child, they usually seems to be smaller and less grand than you remember? Not true for this camp. I will grant you, the beds are a bit hard, the kitchen could use some updating, and the bathrooms are barely civilized. But the outdoor space-the grounds, if you will-continue to delight and overwhelm me.
At age three, I remember, I was so proud of learning how to jump off the wall in our front yard. At five, I would practice my counting as I placed a foot in the center of each large stone that led to our front door. Our outdoor fireplace is where I mastered the skill of roasting marshallows. Every summer ended with the gathering of twigs, cedar, and berries to be placed on the groups of large stones so the fairies would not go hungry.
We did and do everything outdoors at our family's gathering place-from dinners to long conversations to various plays staged in the big front lawn to great games of waffle ball and volleyball. I would watch my aunts garden and my mother collect a bounty for the center of the table. Thereseemed to be no end to what we could produce in our great outdoor space. So it should come as no surprise to you that this is my inspiration, my motivation for the creations of this book.
Sure, the "outdoors in" look is here to stay, and outdoor barbecues are looking more and more like high-tech kitchens. I am interested in promoting this trend, but with a little something extra. What, you ask, could I possibly add to what Mother Nature has already delivered and appliance manufacturers have taken to new heights? Fellowship is my answer. Inspirations and ideas that will create memories for all you love and touch.
Use these pages full of projects and recipes to deliver to your family and friends your own backdrop for them to play and live with. So whether you have a whole camp, a short walkway, or an arrangement of potted plants as your outdoor space, nurture it, love it, and fill it up with the spirit of this book, and I promise young and old will remember and love it for years to come. Your outdoors, like my lakeside camp, will not shrink and age with time if your continue to take the party outside.
