Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
Katie Woo needs to find a job by Friday even though she is still in the first grade. She explains to her mother that it is for her Career Day at school and she needs to talk about a career. She asks her bus driver and her friend Pedro's parents about their jobs. None of these jobs seem to suit Katie. As Career Day nears, she helps Pedro and her friend JoJo with their careers; Katie still cannot decide. To Katie's surprise, her help to her friends shows a job she could have: a leader. In a warm and gentle manner, Katie can inspire readers who are beginning to read chapter books. Her enthusiasm for school and her friends is contagious; the book's cover with a ruffle and flowers may appeal more to girls than boys. The focus on Katie's eagerness to lead can also encourage eager readers who may appear to be bossy. However, the unique ethnic groups that are present and the helpful glossary and extra material at the book's end can appeal to any early elementary reader. There is also a website at the very end to continue the fun by using the book's ISBN as an ID. Part of the "Katie Woo" series. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computer in New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.
Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
