Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Katie Woo is a fun-loving little girl with two best friends, JoJo and Pedro. The three children like to do everything together. This chapter book has four different stories about the trio. In the first story, Katie, JoJo, and Pedro go to the beach. They build a sandcastle, eat fries, lay on a blanket to watch the clouds, and play on the playground. But when Katie is not nice to them, JoJo and Pedro become upset and leave. Will the friends make up and play together again? The second story is about Katie's loose tooth. When JoJo's loose tooth falls out while she is eating popcorn, Katie wants her tooth to fall out too. Many of their classmates have already lost teeth, and Katie doesn't want to be left out. She tries different ways to get the tooth to fall out, including bumping a ball on her head. But nothing works until she meets a puppy. Readers will be surprised to find out how the puppy helps Katie. The third story touches the heart and emotions of readers as they learn about Katie's old dog, Goldie. When the pet died, Katie cries and is sad, and her friends recall the good times they had with Goldie. Together with her friends and her mom, Katie finds a way to remember Goldie and always have her near. Readers who have lost a pet will relate to this moving story. In the final story, the children go camping. They have fun roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories. But later, they are surprised by something they see in the dark. Readers will enjoy finding out what they see. The colorful, beautifully drawn illustrations will delight the reader. This book is part of the "Katie Woo" series. Reviewer: Cathi I. White

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computerin New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.

Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
