Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Christy Devillier
Katie Woo is a bright and self-confident, Asian-American first-grader who takes genuine delight in learning. This collection of four stories begins with "Make-Believe Class" in which a gray, winter day inspires students to imagine school in a variety of exotic places: a tropical island, the moon, Australia, and under the sea. In a career-themed story, Katie has a tough time imagining what sort of job she would enjoy as an adult—until her friends and Miss Winkle, their teacher, come to the rescue. In "Who Needs Glasses?" Katie decides to teach her friend, Pedro, a lesson when he "misplaces" his glasses and puts their group project, a diorama about dinosaurs, at risk. Katie and her class get an up-close look at where milk and eggs come from on a field trip to a farm in "Moo, Katie Woo!" Farmer Jordan introduces the kids to cows, chickens, goats, and his popcorn crop. Hoping to sample some, hungry Katie wanders into the cornfields, gets lost, and finds her way back by following the "moo" calls from her friends. Plentiful, vivid illustrations aptly capture spirited Katie and her experiences. Manushkin's amusing, easy-to-read tales are appropriate for readers age seven and up, while a younger audience may appreciate the stories read aloud. Kids will likely enjoy more of Katie's antics and adventures in the "Katie Woo" series. Reviewer: Christy Devillier

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computerin New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.

Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
