From The CriticsReviewer: Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This pharmacology review is a companion to the 12th edition of the extremely popular Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, Katzung, Masters, and Trevor (McGraw-Hill, 2012).
Purpose: The authors have designed this book to help students review pharmacology for both regular courses as well as certification examinations. They have brought to this edition all of the strengths of the textbook. It is extremely well done.
Audience: Although this book is written primarily for medical students, it is an excellent resource for anyone who has to master the subject of pharmacology for course or certification examinations, such as medical, nursing, pharmacy, or health professional students, or practitioners in these disciplines.
Features: This book is arranged identically to the textbook, presenting the information in a concise format that will facilitate mastery of the subject for examinations. The learning aids in this book have been perfected based on the many years of experience of the authors as educators. These include a short discussion of major concepts that underlie basic principles of pharmacology; outstanding multicolored figures and tables; improved review questions with explanations; drug tree-diagrams that enable students to visualize the important drugs within a group; a list of high-yield terms and definitions that a student must master; Still Keeper questions that allow students to review previous material and integrate material between topics; a checklist of tasks to master for each chapter; excellent summary tables that highlight high-yield information on mechanism of action, effects, clinical uses, pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and adverse effects; two comprehensive 100-question examinations followed by answers and rationales; and valuable test-taking strategies to enhance students' performance. This book contains over 1,000 multiple-choice questions, most of which adhere to the format used on National Board of Medical Examiners certification examinations.
Assessment: This edition is far superior to previous editions of this popular pharmacology review book, and it has been updated to contain all of the important new medications used in the practice of medicine.
