Overview

After being discovered at a karaoke competition in the mid-'90s, Keali'i Reichel rose quickly to the highest pinnacles of Hawaiian superstardom. His first album, Kawaipunahele, is already a Hawaiian classic. Locals from Honolulu to Kaunakakai own a copy of the album, radio stations play the songs incessantly, and any tourist who sets foot in a music store is likely to walk out with the CD. Reichel goes for the tried and true formula: mellow songs; tropical island stylings; and sweet, piping Hawaiian vocal tones. A lot of these songs are reminiscent of former Top 40 hits from the mainland, but only a few of them are actually covers. A couple of notable cover tunes are "In My Life," a Beatles tune that has a Hawaiian verse added, and "If We Hold on Together," which is performed as a duet with Lorna Lim. Most of the songs concern the same things: romance, friendship, and the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. It's nearly impossible to find this album offensive or intrusive. The lyrics are strictly PG-rated, the music is pretty, and the tone remains even-keeled throughout, and that's why Kawaipunahele has become one of the "must-have" albums for visitors to Hawaii.

This cd shows the depth of emotion that the Hawaiian music scene can inspire. Listen and fall in love with the Islands.

This album is Hawaiian music at its best. The whole time it is playing, scenes from my trips replay in my head. Keali'i's voice is great, it rolls over you like island waves. Anything this artist sings is worth buying.

This is one of the best of Keali'i yet.

I just returned from Maui with this album, having heard only a short sample at a vendor's stand in Lahaina. Wow, it stirs the soul! What a beautiful voice and such tender, sensual lyrics. If this is Aloha, then give me more! Mahalo, Keali'i, for allowing me to bring some of my island back to the mainland; my memories of beautiful Maui will be renewed with each playing. Aloha.

This, like all of his other cd's, is a masterpiece in a league of it's own, yet still manages to bring anyone back to the homeland!!! He keeps the tradition alive with wonderful Hawaiian. My favorite song was "I am sitting here wanting memories!!!"

Just spent 6 weeks in Lana'i. Could hear Keali'i being played everywhere I went. His voice and music are a perfect reflection of a perfect paradise! I'm a fan for life now.
