Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this, the second book in the "Kaya American Girl" series, Kaya and her sister Speaking Rain, members of the Nez Perce or Nimíipuu tribe, are captured by raiders. Because she thinks it was her fault they were captured, Kaya takes it upon herself to find a way to get out. With the help of Two Hawks, a Salish boy who was also captured by the raiders, Kaya is able to make her escape, but will they make it back to her tribe? Woven into the story are authentic depictions of the every day life and customs of Native Americans. Chief among these is the strong independence and self-sufficiency of the children in the story, even at a young age. Like other books in the American Girls Collection, this opens a door for children to a world that may have gone unexplored otherwise. It's refreshing to read a story about Native Americans that talks about life before any conflict with Europeans, concentrating on the people at the height of their culture. A short historical section and glossary are included. 2002, Pleasant Company,

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Kaya is a spirited Nez Perce girl in the American Northwest. In the first book, she disobeys her mother, endangering herself and her sister. As a result, the girls are kidnapped by a band of raiders. She realizes that Speaking Rain's blindness could impede a successful escape, and she makes the difficult decision to leave her sister behind. Kaya struggles for miles through the cold and rugged mountains to return home. Relieved to be there, she vows to bring her sister home. In Kaya's Hero, she realizes that she must develop more courage and wisdom before a rescue is possible. Swan Circling patiently mentors her young friend as Kaya tries hard to become worthy of the young woman's respect. The plots proceed simply, making the adventures easy for young readers to follow. Kaya is well developed through her actions and words. Nez Perce vocabulary is interspersed throughout. The illustrations also give evidence of careful research; full-page paintings and small sketches depict both action and artifacts. The color and detail are reflective of the culture and setting. Information about Nez Perce education, clothing, and crafts helps children to better understand the narrative. Readers of the series will be delighted with this new character, time, and culture.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    I Also Recommend:

    Step Back in Time.

Step back in time to 1764 and learn about Kaya and her family. Today they are known as Nez Perce Indians; find out their original name and other interesting facts of life in 1764. What is Kaya's full Nez Perce name? What is her nickname? And why is she called that? Who is Two Hawks? What does "tawts" mean? The answer to these and other probing questions are revealed in book # 2, Kaya Escapes! A Survival Story. In this book Kaya finds out what happens when you do not obey.

    Adventure, fun, and excitement!

This is the 2nd book in the Kaya series. It's about when Kaya and her sister Speaking Rain get captured by enemies! This book shows how much courage a young Native American girl can have. I personally like these books because they really prove that girls can do anything as long as they put their heart to it, and try their hardest, they're unstoppable!

    Kaya's Great Escape

Kaya, a 9 year-old Nez Pearce Indian girl, is forced to take her little sister, Speaking Rain, into the woods when emenmys from Buffalo Country attack. They are unfortunatly captured and some horses. Kaya finds her new life as a slave very depressing. Kaya isn't given much food and gathers wood and water and helps skin pelts. Since Speaking Rain is blind, Kaya works twice as hard. Kaya can't do anything when her horse, Steps High, is used in a trading caravan. The girls know that they must leave soon or they will perhaps be sold again and be farther away from their family. With Speaking Rain unable to travel, Kaya and a boy named Two Hawks escape. In the end, Kaya's father find them both.
