Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maggie L. Schrock
The infamous myth of Pandora's box is explained in this fictional novel, written from the point of view of Hades, King of the Underworld. Hades explains how man was created (by Prometheus, of course), which angered Zeus. Next, Zeus, in turn, created Pandora, and gave her a gift from each of the gods. Zeus himself gave Pandora the gift of extreme curiosity, as well as a box she was told she was not to open. Thanks to a gift of good judgment from Athena, Pandora lives for years on Earth without opening the box. Zeus frequents Pandora's life disguised as various people in an attempt to trick her into opening the box; however, she never does. Unfortunately, she ends up in a tussle with Hades and the box comes open. Inside the box Zeus has trapped all of Earth's miseries. Pandora's gift of joke-telling and optimism saves the day, and life on Earth continued as we know it. Part of the "Myth-O-Mania" series, Keep a Lid on It, Pandora! is a delightfully written story about a well-known myth and is a standalone novel. A map, table of contents, and other tools make this book interesting to read and easy to understand. Reviewer: Maggie L. Schrock
